Injury May Limit Julio Jones

Special from Virginia Zakas InsideInjuries.com December 6, 2016 5:26PM EST
Julio Jones was in and out of the Week 13 loss to the Chiefs in the second half because of an unspecified lower body injury. He appeared to be testing out his foot or his ankle and wasn’t on the field for a few important plays late in the game. Head coach Dan Quinn said Monday during his weekly press conference that the issue is turf toe. This is an injury that can vary in severity – if it’s a minor case of turf toe, then it’s something he can play through and recover from in a few weeks. More serious cases of turf toe can take months to recover from and land players on IR.Injury Scale

There’s no real reason to be overly concerned about Julio Jones right now. He is no stranger to playing through nagging injuries, and he is often just limited throughout the week as the Falcons manage his reps. I think we will see more of that heading into their Week 14 matchup with the Rams, but it may be wise for the Falcons to rest their star receiver so he can be healthy as they make a final push for the playoffs.

The Inside Injuries algorithm has moved Jones into the elevated risk category with news of the turf toe injury. While I want to expect another big day for the receiver against the struggling Rams, don’t be surprised if he does still show some signs of his toe bothering him. Turf toe makes it painful to plant and cut, so this injury can really impact a guy like Jones, who relies on being explosive.
