In my Grapefruit League report
last week, I said it was my favorite week of the year. If last week
is my favorite, this week has to be my least favorite. We’re not
quite to the point in spring training when teams have made major
cuts yet, (We’re still seeing players with numbers in the 80s and
90s), and most of us are still a couple weeks away from our drafts.
It’s like being a kid at Christmas-time: when the tree first goes
up there’s tremendous excitement, but by December 15th
it’s like; “come on fat man, get here already!”
Regardless of my despair this week, there’s still work to be
done. Here’s a handful of players you should be monitoring as we
count down the days until Christmas…I mean, draft day.
BALTIMORE ORIOLES: For the second spring in a
row, Orioles prospect Joey Rickard is tearing it
up. He wasn’t originally thought to get much playing time, other
than a possible platoon against lefties, but if he continues at his
current pace manager Buck Showalter will have to find a permanent
spot for him. He’s 10 for 26, with 10 runs, three HRs and steals; a
.568 OBP, .888 PAP, and 1.337 OPS.
