Wait, what? What’s going on here?
About 20-years ago I worked a varsity scrimmage as part of a referee crew in Summit, NJ on a football field that was under construction. There was work being done in one of the endzones and the goal post was down so consequently when there was a field goal or an extra point kick attempt, we had to switch ends of the field. While this became a bit of a nuisance as the game went on, it really wasn’t a big deal. What was a big deal however is that when a Summit runner ran for a first down and was tackled on the 11-yard line yard line heading towards the endzone, upon resetting the first down markers, the chains showed that in order to get a 10-yard first down, Summit would have to go 4-yards into the endzone. As it turns out, the problem wasn’t that the chains were too long. The problem was that the school lined a 95-yard field. Since the field was under construction and there were no numbers on the field, it wasn’t something that was obvious unless you counted it off and thus I was able to rationalize the snafu.
I’m not certain what the problem is here at the University of Minnesota, Crookston though. Yes, I know they are a Division II team, but they are still an academic institution right? And this is still football right? How could someone center the school logo on the 45-yard line without anyone noticing? Even in the CFL they are able to do the math correct on the larger field and put it on the 55-yard line… Truly bizarro… Some things you just can’t make up…
BTW – The Minnesota Golden Eagles beat Southwest Minnesota State 33-28 on Saturday for their first win of the season. Maybe they should just leave it…
