I was just about to submit my weekly watch list article and just before I hit enter, the Indians announced that Corey Kluber was being placed on the DL due to lower back discomfort. Shortly after that, the Rangers announced that their ace, Cole Hamels, would miss eight weeks of the season due to an oblique strain. Just like that, two of the top pitchers in baseball are going to miss game action. Is it me, or has this cold start to the first month of the season and the new 10-day DL option caused more players than usual to land on the disabled list? Whatever the reason, there are plenty of baseball players missing in action and you need to find replacements for them. To help you out, I’ve identified another five prospects who are just a step away from getting the call to the big leagues. Treat them as insurance and keep them on your watch list. All stats are accurate as of the morning of 5/3/2017. Good luck!!
Yohander Mendez, SP, Texas Rangers
