Arrieta has had a rough go of it to start 2017, which has many worried, especially his Fantasy owners. His ERA sits at 4.80 and his WHIP is at 1.40, even after a great last outing. However, if you take a closer look, Arrieta isn’t pitching as poorly as those numbers would indicate. His peripheral numbers paint a picture of a pitcher who is still very solid, even if he’s a tad diminished from his dominant 2015 and 2016 numbers. His velocity is a bit down, but his strikeout numbers are still rather high and his K/BB ratio is 3.77. His dip in production is also not tied to any health issue, as he is a low injury risk with a peak Health Performance Factor according to Inside Injuries. He’s been a bit unlucky (.355 BABIP against) and has given up more homers.
