Magic’s Elfrid Payton and Hawks’ Ersan Ilyasova Among NBA Injured for Week 3

Joel Embiid PHI: bruised right hand

Uh oh. Joel Embiid appears to have bruised his right hand against the Mavericks on Sunday. X-rays on his hand came back negative, and the 76ers are reportedly “not worried” about the injury. Embiid was able to play against the Rockets on Monday. It isn’t a lower body injury, but any injury to The Process is worrisome. This injury is also to his shooting hand. Keep an eye on this and have a backup ready in case it flares up.

Greg Monroe MIL: left calf soreness

Bucks head coach Jason Kidd revealed that Greg Monroe will miss the next two weeks with left calf soreness. Apparently, the injury has been hampering him since training camp, but Monroe tweaked it again on Thursday against the Celtics. Monroe hasn’t been much of a Fantasy option this year and is definitely a drop candidate with this news.

Elfrid Payton ORL: hamstring strain

Payton strained his left hamstring last Friday and is expected to continue to miss games. His strain is considered “mild to moderate” and the Inside Injuries algorithm is calculating a three to five week Optimal Recovery Time. Hamstring injuries can be some of the most nagging injuries, so the Magic will need to rest Payton until the muscle is completely healed before they try to push him to return.

DeMarre Carroll BRO: ankle soreness

DeMarre Carroll is questionable for Tuesday’s game after missing Sunday’s matchup with ankle soreness. Considering the Nets only have two games this week, there isn’t any reason to consider Carroll in Fantasy lineups in the near future. He needs a week of rest before he’s ready to get back on the court.

Ersan Ilyasova ATL: knee bone bruise

The Hawks are going to continue to be careful with Ersan Ilyasova after he sustained a bone bruise in his knee last week. He missed Sunday’s game against the Bucks and is expected to miss the next 1-2 weeks. He is a High Injury Risk and a good drop candidate, with John Collins and Mike Muscala picking up the extra minutes.

Austin Rivers LAC: dislocated pinky

Rivers was starting for Milos Teodosic (foot) when he dislocated the pinky finger in his right hand on Thursday. The medical staff was able to pop it back into place on the sidelines and Rivers continued playing. Apparently, there was no ligament damage because Rivers played against the Pistons on Saturday, and the dislocated finger in his shooting hand didn’t seem to slow him down. He is still a High Injury Risk, so if he gets hit in the hand or jams his finger anytime soon, he’s in danger of worsening the injury.

Nene Hilario HOU: Achilles injury

Nene suffered an Achilles injury last Tuesday and tried to return to action on Saturday but appears to have suffered a setback. He played 15 minutes off the bench in Saturday’s matchup and 10 minutes in Monday’s game against the 76ers. Hilario already doesn’t play on back-to-back sets and was an Elevated Injury Risk all through the offseason, so it’s no surprise he is injured again. Achilles injuries also tend to linger, so the only way to get Hilario completely healthy is to rest him for the next two weeks.

Quincy Acy BRO: left groin strain

Quincy Acy did not play on Sunday and has been ruled out of Tuesday’s game after suffering an apparent left groin strain on Friday against the Magic. He played well in Friday’s matchup, but he must have suffered the injury sometime in the second half. He is day-to-day moving forward but the early rule-outs have us wondering if this is a bit more serious than the Nets are letting on. Like hamstring injuries, groin issues have a tendency to linger and often pop back up even when a player thinks they are healthy. The Nets should play it safe and keep Acy out the full three-week Optimal Recovery Time.

J.J. Redick PHI: lower back tightness

Even though it sounds like a minor issue, J.J. Redick’s lower back tightness is something to keep an eye on. Redick has dealt with back tightness before in his career, and it seems to be a nagging issue. He did not participate in practice on Friday and then was downgraded to questionable for Saturday’s matchup before eventually being ruled out. He also did not play on Monday. Redick should only need a week of rest, but considering he has dealt with back issues before, the 76ers may choose to be cautious with him.

Marquese Chriss PHO: sprained left ankle

Chriss rolled his right ankle in Week 1 and then rolled his left ankle in Week 2. Neither injury forced Chriss to miss time, so our algorithm calculated minor tweaks for both ankles. That being said, Chriss did not look 100 percent during Saturday’s game. He should have given himself a few days of rest to help heal both of his ankles. The Suns play again on Tuesday, so Chriss had two days off to help his recovery. Hopefully, that was enough.
