In-Depth Injury Analysis on Texans’ Will Fuller, Falcons’ Devonta Freeman and more

Will Fuller  WR, Texans: rib fractures

Will Fuller suffered rib fractures in the Texans’ Week 10 loss to the Rams. With a three week Optimal Recovery Time (ORT), he is in danger of missing 1-2 games. Fuller could try to play before he hits the three-week mark, but it will be very painful and he will be at a High Risk of reinjury. When a wide receiver attempts to play through a ribs injury, it is painful to reach for a pass, and each blow to the chest is incredibly painful.

The good news for Fuller is that the fractures are not displaced, and they appear to be in less serious location. His Health Performance Factor (predictor of performance based on any injury concerns) currently sits at Below Average, but it should improve to Above Average if he takes Week 11 off and gets closer to that ORT.

Fuller was also listed with a knee injury last week, but he practiced in full and was removed from the final injury report.

Rob Kelley RB, Redskins: ankle sprain

As Kelley was tackled from behind on Sunday, his left leg got rolled up, injuring his knee and ankle. Kelley was seen leaving the stadium in a walking boot and on crutches. The mechanism often leads to a high ankle sprain and a knee injury (most likely an MCL sprain), but right now the ankle is the bigger concern. With a four-week Optimal Recovery Time, Kelley is unlikely to suit up in Week 11.

Kelley missed time earlier this year with separate injuries. In Week 3 it was a rib injury that kept him on the sideline, and in Week 6 his ankle was a concern. That injury was to his right ankle, though, so this is a new injury. Tests on Monday confirmed our speculation of a high ankle sprain and moderate MCL sprain. Consider him out indefinitely.

Devonta Freeman RB, Falcons: concussion

For the second time this season, and the third time since 2015, Devonta Freeman is in concussion protocol. It’s still early, but it is already looking very unlikely that he will be cleared to play next Monday night against the Seahawks. Two concussions within three months and three concussions within two years are very concerning numbers. Concussions also have a cumulative effect.

Freeman was also on the injury report with a knee injury last week and with a shoulder/abdomen injury the previous week. Inside Injuries had him at a High Injury Risk entering Week 10, and now his numbers have dropped even lower. Even if Freeman misses multiple weeks to recover and clear concussion protocol, he could remain a High Risk player for the remainder of the season.

Drew Stanton QB, Cardinals: knee sprain

In Thursday night’s game against the Seahawks, Stanton sprained his knee. The Cardinals haven’t said much about what exactly is going on, but he is in danger of missing Week 11, and possibly longer. The team is already hurting without David Johnson and Carson Palmer, and they would be forced to turn to Matt Barkley if Stanton can’t go. He is now a High Injury Risk with a Poor Health Performance Factor. Playing through the injury would not be a good idea.

Brett Hundley QB, Packers: hamstring strain

Brett Hundley led the Packers to a win over the Bears on Sunday. Although he was able to finish the game, he was fighting through a hamstring strain. Hundley was hurt on a 17-yard scramble downfield. He was moving slowly, then slid awkwardly to try to protect himself.

Hundley says he is ok, but hamstring strains can be tricky. He hopes to play in Week 11, but he will need to test out his leg this week to make sure he can still be effective. As Aaron Jones remains sidelined, losing Hundley would be another tough blow to the banged up Packers. Because Hundley is a quarterback, he should be ok to play through this injury.

Aaron Jones RB, Packers: MCL sprain

An MRI Monday confirmed that Aaron Jones is dealing with a MCL sprain. Jones was given a 3-6 week recovery time, which is in line with the 4-plus week Optimal Recovery Time calculated by the Inside Injuries algorithm. This is a moderate (grade 2) injury and could involve a partial tear to the MCL. This ligament can usually heal on its own, but it takes time.

Ty Montgomery RB, Packers: rib injury

After Aaron Jones was carted to the locker room with his knee injury, Montgomery was close behind. Montgomery suffered multiple rib fractures in Week 4, missed Week 5, but was back on the field in Week 6. He has been playing through some rib discomfort over the past month. We have said time and time again how difficult rib injuries can be for running backs due to all of the contact they face.

On Sunday, Montgomery re-injured his ribs. If he was hit in the same location where the rib fractures occurred, then the hit may have caused inflammation of the cartilage of the ribs, which is incredibly painful and difficult to control.

Allen Hurns WR, Jaguars: ankle/foot injury

Hurns crawled off the field after injuring his right leg with less than a minute left on Sunday to prevent a 10-second runoff, and it was a key moment that led to the Jaguars’ win. Hurns was seen leaving the stadium on crutches and with a walking boot on his right foot. He is undergoing further tests Monday to determine his injury.

Jacoby Brissett QB, Colts: concussion

Brissett was involved in one of the many concussion controversies in Week 10. It started with Russell Wilson and ended with Brissett. He took a hard helmet-to-helmet hit and his body appeared to go limp before he was helped up by his teammates. Brissett left the game to be evaluated but was cleared to return. After the game, he experienced delayed symptoms and is now in concussion protocol.

Marcus Mariota QB, Titans: left shoulder injury

As Mariota was tackled by his ankles, he fell to the ground, landing hard on his left (non-throwing) shoulder. The Titans have a quick turnaround with the Thursday night game, but he isn’t in danger of missing Week 11. Because the injury is to his non-throwing shoulder, the Optimal Recovery Time is just one week. The biggest concern will be his ability to protect himself.

Look for Mariota to miss some practice time this week. It will be a painful injury for him to play through, but it won’t keep him off of the field.
