Kevin Durant GS: left thigh contusion
Kevin Durant suffered a left thigh contusion in the first quarter of last Monday’s game but was able to finish out the game with 21 points, eight rebounds, six assists, a steal and three blocks in the win over the Heat. It came as somewhat of a surprise when he was ruled out of Wednesday’s matchup, but that was the only game he missed to the injury. He practiced on Friday and had an amazing performance on Saturday, so we don’t think this is going to be much of a concern going forward. He is an Elevated Injury Risk, but his Above Average Health Performance tells us that his injury isn’t going to hinder him.
Jayson Tatum BOS: sore right ankle
Tatum injured his right ankle on Wednesday but was able to walk back to the locker room under his own power with trainers at the end of the second quarter. The Celtics ruled him out for the rest of the game at the start of the second half. He was seen in a walking boot after the game, which was worrisome, but an MRI on his ankle came back negative. After going through warm-ups, Tatum was able to play on Friday, but he wasn’t 100 percent. Even a soft tissue ankle injury comes with at least a one week Optimal Recovery Time, so Tatum put himself at risk by returning too soon. Luckily, the rookie has hardly any injuries to his name so he should be fine going forward.
Steph Curry GS: right thigh contusion
Steph Curry is questionable for Monday’s game against Orlando after suffering a right thigh contusion on Saturday night. He took a knee to the thigh from Ben Simmons. After the game Curry admitted that he might be sore but wasn’t too concerned about missing time. “I’m sure it’s going to hurt tomorrow, but I’m sure I’ll be alright,” Curry told the media. Unfortunately, Curry has dropped to a High Injury Risk, so he really needs at least a week of rest before trying to play.
Al Horford BOS: concussion
Al Horford returned to action on Sunday after missing the past two games with a concussion. He suffered the head injury on Monday against the Hawks. Last season, Horford missed nine games to a concussion, which makes it even more worrisome this time around. Though this concussion was deemed less severe than last year’s, repeated head injuries are always cause for concern. Given his injury history, he remains still a High Injury Risk, even after clearing concussion protocol.
Carmelo Anthony OKC: sore back
Carmelo Anthony missed Sunday’s matchup with the Mavericks with a sore back. It was the first we had heard about the injury, but Anthony is no stranger to back problems. While this seems to just be some soreness, it could turn into a lingering problem if Melo doesn’t wait it out. We shouldn’t see him back on the court for at least three weeks.
Rudy Gobert UTA: right knee bone bruise
Rudy Gobert was diagnosed with a bone bruise in his right knee after crashing into Dion Waiters in Friday’s game. The big guy went down holding his knee and limped to the locker room. He fought through the pain and was able to finish out Friday’s game but was unable to play in Saturday’s matchup. He has since been ruled out for the next four to six weeks with the injury, which is in line with the Inside Injuries Optimal Recovery Time. Four weeks out means Gobert would miss 13 games but six weeks out puts him at closer to 20.
Damian Lillard POR: left ring finger injury
Lillard suffered a minor injury to the ring finger on his left hand, but there isn’t much concern about him missing time. Lillard is known for being able to fight through the pain, so a minor injury to his non-shooting hand is not going to hinder him at all.
D’Angelo Russell BRO: left knee injury
D’Angelo Russell has had a solid start to the season but has been hampered by injuries. He suffered an injury to his left knee on Saturday but was able to limp to the locker room under his own power. Initial reports are suggesting that Russell is just dealing with a contusion, but further testing will reveal the extent of the damage and provide a more accurate Optimal Recovery Time. He’s expected to miss “several games,” which lines up with the three-week recovery time the Inside Injuries algorithm calculated. Russell will be a High Injury Risk until he has reached the end of that timetable.
Kyrie Irving BOS: facial fracture
Kyrie Irving was elbowed in the face by Aaron Baynes during the first quarter of Friday’s game and it caused some bleeding. Luckily, Irving cleared the concussion evaluation, but he did suffer a minor facial fracture under his right eye. Irving is being fitted for a mask, but he is still expected to miss the next few games. Irving needs two weeks to recover before he’s in the clear, according to the Inside Injuries algorithm. It’s also worth noting that a mask could significantly hinder Irving’s play.
