New York Jets to Hold Numerous Team Tryouts

Idzik wants to hold tryouts like Dick Vermeil in 1976 – Oh boy…

The Jets introduced John Idzik as their new general manager on Thursday. In his first media press conference, Idzik was peppered with questions about the state of the Jets and detailed his vision for his new team. Idzik said the most important and immediate thing to do is a “thorough and comprehensive review of our roster.” He also stressed that decision-making will be a collaborative effort, using the phrase “the power of we” several times.

“There will be a constant influx of competition,” Idzik said about the roster. “The draft will be very important to us. It will be a lifeline for us.” Idzik also said he’ll explore free agency, trades and numerous tryouts “in search for guys who play like a Jet.”

As expected, Idzik was noncommittal on the quarterback situation and evaded questions on Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow and the possibility of Matt Flynn or any other free agent quarterbacks coming to the team.

In response to questions of reports that Woody Johnson was “very interested” in exploring trade possibilities of All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, Idzik again declined to answer questions about specific players, citing his short time with the team. “It’s way premature to say anything specific,” Idzik said.

In summary, Idzik showed up for a photo-op today and we learned nothing other than the Jets will be holding tryouts. No joke…

Random Musings – Idzik is looking for guys who “play like a Jet.” Why? Playing like a Jet has been the problem! Hey, perhaps they will hire Vince Papale to administer the tryouts…
