We are a week into the regular season and the closer we thought would lose his job first has already done so, and at least one other is on a very hot seat.

Carlos Marmol has lost the closer job for the Cubs. He’s been replaced by Kyuji Fujiwaka, who has himself struggled after notching the Opening Day save in relief of Marmol.  Marmol has simply been dreadful, giving up six hits and two walks in just 1 2/3 innings.  Although he somehow managed a save (after giving up 2 runs with a 3-run lead), he has looked lost and can be safely dropped in almost all Fantasy formats.  Hold onto him only if you have a deep bench and hope he somehow straightens himself out. Fujikawa has struggled as well, but he’s earned over 200 saves in his career in Japan and should settle in as the team’s closer.

John Axford is in deep trouble, as his control and velocity are very much in question.  He’s blown a save, had a poor outing in a non-save situation and took the loss in an extra-inning game (the closer trifecta).  Axford’s velocity is down, he’s given up three HRs, and he could be out of a job – or on the disabled list – any day now. Jim Henderson will be at the ready for save opportunities; if you need saves, or own Axford, go get Henderson now.
