As a new Fantasy Premier League campaign kicks off, we launch our new-look previews aimed at giving you the best insight into #FPL over what will be another gripping season.
Each week we’ll bring you the best picks for the defensive, midfield and forward positions, as well as an outsider and your best shout for the captain’s armband.
We start with a look at a man facing old friends:
DEFENSE: Dejan Lovren, Liverpool – £5.5m (Home v Southampton)
Croatian Lovren swapped St Mary’s for Anfield in the summer, and as he goes into his league debut for his new club he has the twin motivations of impressing his new fans and upsetting his old ones.
He’s also scored on his last two appearances at the ground, the winner for Southampton last season and a header on his first appearance in a red shirt against Borussia Dortmund last week, so he’ll be a goal threat as well having clean sheet hopes.
MIDFIELD: Aaron Ramsey, Arsenal – £9.0m (Home v Crystal Palace)
Plenty have been blinded by the fact that Alexis Sanchez has been listed as a midfielder ahead of his first season with the Gunners, but the undisputed Arsenal king in that area is still Aaron Ramsey.
The Welshman scored in last weekend’s Community Shield and will be a hugely influential figure in a game that the Gunners simply need to win if they aren’t to completely destroy their current feelgood factor.
FORWARD: Diego Costa, Chelsea – £10.5m (Away v Burnley)
Two goals in a pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad have got the Brazilian-born Spaniard up and running in time for the new season, and with Didier Drogba injured and Fernando Torres still Fernando Torres then he’s sure to start at Burnley.
Turf Moor might not be the most glamorous venue for him to make his English football debut, but if Costa clicks this season then Chelsea will suddenly look to be a much stronger force.
THE OUTSIDER (a player with less than 5% ownership): Nikica Jelavic – £6m (Away v QPR)
The last two times QPR played at home on the opening day of a Premier League season they lost 4-0 to Bolton and then 5-0 to Swansea.
Hull City have already got their competitive edge after a couple of Europa League fixtures, and with Shane Long apparently set for a transfer to Southampton, forward Jelavic could prosper against a new-look and unfamiliar home defence.
THE CAPTAIN: Wayne Rooney – £10.5m (Home v Swansea)
Manchester United’s new captain could don the armband for your side on the opening weekend, as Louis van Gaal’s side begin what they’ll hope to be a new dawn at home to Swansea.
Rooney has proven to be a popular choice this summer as plenty expect United to do much better than last year, and all of that could well start here in the opening match of the campaign.
