Fantasy Football BlogTalk with RotoExperts Staff by Ben Ice Comment (0)

It's been a long time coming but we are finally launching our site blogs. Our goal is to have a blog for each sport we have writers covering so they can post their random thoughts on players, teams and news relative to the fantasy world.

We will also use the blogs to keep you informed of the many appearances on podcasts, radio stations and the new Fantasy Sports Channel on BlogTalkRadio.  BlogTalkRadio (BTR) is launching this new channel with a lot of fanfare, and we'll be featured on launch day, September 2nd.

Our current schedule on BTR (All times EST)

Thursday Nights 8-9pm  - Xperts Edge with Scott Engel, Jon Phillips and Phil Elleto

Friday Nights 7-8pm - Sports Smack with Ben Ice and Matt Greber

Sunday 11am-Noon - Pregame with Scott Engel and guests

By now you've surely reviewed the Fantasy Football Draft Central Page and registered to access all the free premium content. That's where the good stuff is, so if you've been waffling on whether to register or not, I urge you to take the leap. Don't worry, we won't send you chain mails or spam you about the latest Viagra knockoff which can "make your member sing."

So, this week an NBA trade happened, and no one is really talking about it. I think it has more implications in it than you might expect.

We already reviewed Baron Davis' departure from the GSW to the LA Clippers. Let's not waste time on the "why's" and the "say what's" about Baron's decison (suffice it to say that the Clips were willing to buy in for a longer term than the Warriors, and that's what led to the change).

Alternatively, think about the team he leaves behind. It is common knowledge that one of my personal faves, Monta Ellis, is a dynamic scorer who the team would like to groom as a point guard. He has made excellent progress working within Nellie's exciting, high paced system. Now, with Baron out of the picture, it's time to make that final determination on whether he has what it takes to carry the team as the go-to PG.

That's a great goal, and I wish them all the best, but that's not the end of the story.

First, Monta is a restricted free agent, and one whom the Memphis Grizzlies covet regardless of the multiple options they currently command at the point. Hopefully the Warriors have enough sense to lock Monta in, and to match any qualifying offers that the Griz care to throw at him.

Second, the team went out this week and traded for "former point guard of the future once Jason Kidd hangs up his sneakers in New Jersey," Marcus Williams. With the addition of Devin Harris last year as part of the return package for Kidd, the Nets have found themselves with a more experienced, and possibly more talented "PG of the future." So Williams became expendable.

Enter the Warriors. One rapidly-negotiated trade later, Williams was on his way to Oak-town. Alas, there's news for the Warriors, but what's that I hear...I can't believe, it's...nothing.

That's right, the trade went through with barely a whisper of coverage. I think that's shortsighted. Let's say Monta doesn't go to Memphis and assumes the starting PG role to open the season. Who's his backup? Exactly.

Marcus Williams came in as a highly-regarded player, one who could really make noise in the NBA. He is still that guy, but I just don't think he was a fit for the plodding Net system. There are four scenarios where Williams will get a shot at becoming a fantasy force this year:

1. Monta Ellis walks, leaving a chasm at the starting PG position. Williams steps up and shows everyone that New Jersey gave up on him too early.

2. Monta Ellis stays, but goes down with an injury (not like he's never been hurt before), and Williams is forced to step into action. And with those weapons, I smell potential success.

3. Ellis becomes a massive bust as a PG and Nellie is forced to move him back to the starting SG slot. Williams enters the starting lineup with another shiny new toy to receive his passes and finish the play.

4. Nothing changes, but, in true Nellie-ball fashion, the team chooses to employ long stretches of small-ball, run-and-gun basketball. I like the chances of this happening, regardless who starts. We already saw that big man Andris Biedrins (who is also a RFA and being pursued by the Sonics) can't hang with up-tempo games, assuming he is still a Warrior this year. I can easily see 15-20 MPG of a lineup consisting of Williams, Ellis, Stephen Jackson, Corey Maggette, and Al Harrington.

Okay fantasy players, wipe that drool from your chin and pay attention. Marcus Williams will surprise you this year. Don't let him go undrafted in the latter part of your draft.

Let me know if you agree or disagree, or even if you think I'm insane! Post comments here or email me at tommy@rotoexperts.com with your thoughts, and I'll highlight the good ones in a future blog.

Namaste,
