.jpg) Icon SMI You gotta feel sorry for Avery Johnson, regardless of how classy he was in his departure speech after he was fired (prematurely in my opinion) by the Dallas Mavericks. Mark Cuban simply will not tolerate back-to-back first round losses in the NBA Western Conference playoffs. A similar thing happened with the Reds this year, when they surprisingly dumped GM Wayne Krivsky after he pulled together what looks like it will be a dominant starting pitching rotation for years to come. Why is it that owners feel the need to micromanage team operations? With Cuban, it is not surprising. But to fire a GM so early in the MLB season, I just don't get it. |

.jpg) Icon SMI What a week. I just returned home from a trip to Chicago on business, and so many things have conspired in the wonderful world of fantasy baseball. It's very disappointing to spend six days in one of my favorite sports cities without an opportunity to catch a Cubs or Sox game. Both teams had series against their same-league team from the Big Apple, both of which would have been outstanding to catch. Oh well, work before play as they say, but that's how it goes. But fear not fair readers, I've spent the last 12 hours catching up on all the "goings on" that I missed while offline and out of pocket. On to this week's waiver wire gems [all statistics current through Friday, April 25]. |

I was talking to fellow columnist Jon Phillips last week, and we realized that we both watch American Idol. Yeah, I know the show's demographic is mostly female, but I'm not embarassed. I know some of you "manly" types out there are closet AI fans; admit it! As a former musician, I actually agree with Simon Cowell's opinion in about 90% of his rants. Yeah, he can be a bit brash at times, but if you subject yourself to his criticism, you really can't complain when he dishes on you. I really wish I had the power to vote someone off the show, rather than vote for the one or two decent performers who are still in it. I mean, c'mon, that Archuleta kid has the worst taste in song selection I've ever seen. Maybe he can sing, but I can't get past the lame ass Michael Bolton-esque crooning. (Editor's Note: We here at RotoExperts do not support or condone in any way the watching of American Idol. Tommy will be punished.) Fortunately, in fantasy baseball, we can vote anyone we choose off our roster. And we can be as brash as we wanna be with these guys. But in the immortal words of Simon himself . . . "The object of this competition is not to be mean to the losers but to find a winner. The process makes you mean because you get frustrated." And I'm here to help avoid your frustration. Let's get right to the waiver wire gems [all statistics current through Friday, April 18]. |

We are now a couple of weeks into the 2008 season, and it certainly has been interesting so far. Some elite players are slumping heavily in the early going (Miguel Cabrera, David Ortiz, C.C. Sabathia). Like I said last week, it's still too early to get worried about top tier players like these. On the other hand, it's not too early to get concerned about your sleepers who aren't getting playing time or aren't delivering. Take a look at those guys, and if you see a lot of strikeouts with very few walks with little else to hang your hat on, then it may be time to go for another guy with upside. |
