.jpg) Jackson Pollock: The Key There is an art to fantasy baseball that some of us have yet to discover. Just like any poem, song, story or painting, when it is executed well fantasy baseball is a beautiful thing to behold. Some would attach a certain connotation to the label "art" that implies that there is an underlying class structure that makes certain levels more difficult to attain to some people. I won't resist it or deny it. Fantasy baseball, like any art can be created by anyone but at a certain point genius will separate itself from the pack. Is that snobbish? I suppose that depends on your level of appreciation, but then some look at the work of Jackson Pollock and insist their kindergartener is equally talented. |

.jpg) MVL Rights LLC Expectations are a funny thing. This week I’ll be attending an early release party for the new Iron Man movie. I was a comic book geek growing up (hey, I’m still growing in unfortunate ways) and Iron Man was always one of my favorites. So this week I’m expecting to see one of my favorite movies of the summer (I’m a massive movie geek too) and collect a sack of cool swag to go with it. I’m expecting this to be the case for a few reasons: 1) Jon Favreau is a very solid director. Not a great one, in my opinion, but I feel like he gets the whole “Comic Book Movie” thing. 2) The movie trailers have made the Iron Man armor look pretty impressive. 3) The Intel guy that invited me promised me a cool bag of swag if I attended. 4) Marvel Comics is on a roll when it comes to making solid movies based on their comic book properties. 5) I’m watching Super-Hero Sunday on FX and it has me all jazzed up to see it. Does this mean the Iron Man movie will be great? No, it does not. |

You have probably noticed that the huge market teams like the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have started to change the way they build their teams. Gone are the days of throwing multiple millions at mediocre veterans to fill out the bench or at middling pitchers to fill out the rotation. These days the operating strategies of the Red Sox and Yankees aren't dramatically different than those of the Atlanta Braves or Milwaukee Brewers. In case it isn't obvious, the big market teams are holding on to their young players and giving them meaningful roles on their squads even as they attempt to keep ridiculously long playoff streaks alive. |

I love making trades. I have a reputation in my leagues for trading any player at anytime. I have traded players that were blisteringly hot for players in the deepest of slumps. I feel comfortable doing this because I don’t allow small sample sizes and lucky streaks to blind me to what is really going on with a player. This season I plan to help you do just the same. Every Tuesday Moving Up and Moving Down will feature players that you should feel comfortable having on your active roster or acquiring via trade and warn you about players that you should bench or trade away for the best looking bag of balls some sucker will offer you. Obviously we are just a couple of weeks into the new season and we have nothing but small samples to go on. Still we can examine the underlying indicators to see which performances ring true and which look like temporary flukes. Then we can look at the track record of the player and decide how much faith or lack thereof we should show in our players either maintaining their good starts or improving on a bad one. |
