Need help managing your roster? Do you think Kenny Rogers could show you the way, or is Gordon Gecko more your speed? Either way, in this week’s article, Matt and Tom discuss four players who you should be spending some time thinking about how they will help your fantasy team for the rest of the season. |

Tom: This past Thursday was a very important day for all fantasy baseball players. No it wasn’t Homer Bailey’s first start of the season. It was the 2008 MLB Players Draft! And we even had television coverage! Now I might have stated this before, but I’ll say it again - I am a huge fan of drafts. The thing about the MLB Draft is that while you can try your best to get invested in that young prospect your favorite team selected, it’s not very likely that you will see that player - who is up on stage donning the appropriate MLB affiliate cap – in the Big Show anytime soon. Of course there are always a few exceptions. The big payoff generally comes years after a player is drafted. So why pay attention now? Well, I’ll give you one good reason why – Jay Bruce. To the many of us who follow the draft and a player’s development in the Minor Leagues, Bruce was no surprise at all. The same goes for 2007 Rookie of the Year Ryan Braun. Both players were top draft picks in 2005, and now both are big time difference makers in the Majors and in your fantasy league. Last year I was lucky enough to pick up Ryan Braun off of waivers. Braun was the biggest waiver pick-up of the year last year. This year many owners actually drafted Bruce and sat him on their bench for the first month of the season – which turned out to be a smart move. So pay attention this year because in a few years you’re going to want to pencil in a few of this year’s prospects and stash them on your bench while you wait for their early season call-up. Then again, you can always take a flier on some late round talents – Albert Pujols (13th round), Roy Oswalt (23rd round), Jason Bay (22nd round), etc.

Matt: Today we turn the calendar forward another page and start a new month. Last week I talked about "June Swoons" and it looks like my Indians decided to get a head start by losing 10 of their past 12 games. Tom’s Mets haven’t fared much better and rumors abound that a Willie Randolph firing is more of a ‘when’ then an ‘if’ these days. Detouring quickly to the racetrack – it looks like even though he has a bruised heel, Big Brown will try to go at The Belmont Stakes and try to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. The most recent horse who had a shot was Smarty Jones in 2004, who won the first two legs but finished second at The Belmont Stakes. An even more elusive Triple Crown is baseball’s Triple Crown. The last player to do it in either league was Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. This year, Josh Hamilton and Lance Berkman are flirting with Triple Crown numbers, and time will tell if they can enter their names in the history books. However, today Tom and I will discuss players who have had All-Star, and in the case of Vladimir Guerrero, Hall of Fame careers but who are underperforming mightily in 2008. Are these perennial early-round fantasy picks permanently down, or will they rebound and have the numbers we have come to expect from them over their careers? More pertinent to fantasy owners is the question, "Should I hold onto this player and wait for his eventual rebound for the stretch run or should I trade him now before his value drops too low?" Don’t worry – Tom and I are here to help you answer those nagging questions. Tom: Matt, I’m one of those guys who thinks that there will never again be a Triple Crown winner in baseball. I fall into the category of gentlemen who argue that there are too many specialized hitters in baseball for that to happen. The Triple Crown in horse racing – now that’s a different story. I think it’s possible that Big Brown can win at the Belmont next weekend; though I’m not sure it’s as big a deal as the Triple Crown I nearly completed this past weekend. I found a $20 bill in my bathing suit which I apparently left in the pocket last summer. So, as I am up $20 already – I figured what better way to celebrate my cool winnings than to put all $20 in a slot machine in Yonkers! Papa needs a new pair of shoes! And guess what, I could buy several pair with the $180 I won while playing the slots! For those of you keeping score, I was up $200 at that point. All on found money from a bathing suit I haven’t worn in a year. So, there I was, two for two. Things were looking up for the old Triple Tom (note: no one’s ever called me that). That was until I decided to play poker that night with some friends with my cold hard cash. Yikes! I was so off that night that it wasn’t even funny. After a full night of playing cards, throwing in a few bucks for adult beverages, and losing $12 in a "no way you can strike me out in whiffle ball" bet, I was only up $8. Total! So my found money turned into $8. I guess you can say I ran well at the Derby and the Preakness, but the Belmont really kicked my behind! Matt, let’s talk baseball, I need a pick-me-up.
