 Diamond in the Rough

3B Matt Gamel, 22 (R), Huntsville Stars (Milwaukee Brewers)

Matt Gamel was selected in the fourth round of the 2005 draft.  He’s been overshadowed by a rich Brewer farm system that seems to have tapped into an endless vein of fantasy gold.  While prospect “gurus” are starting to show him some love, those kudos come with an asterisk.  Gamel is mashing along side his more heralded counterpart, Matt LaPorta; it’s his glove that’s giving him fits, figuratively and literally.

The good news is A) his bat is proving too good to pass up, B) Ryan Braun can do it so Gamel can too and C) in fantasy we aren’t all that concerned about his glove work, with the exception that I might keep him out of the Brewers’ line up.  And yes, I did just compare him to Braun.  He can be that good.

While LaPorta has seen his popularity increasing even in redraft leagues lately Gamel isn’t far behind him, but for the moment not nearly as well known. Don’t be the guy slapping himself upside the head because he waited too long to snag this kid, and if you are in a keeper league where he is available….STOP READING THIS AND GO GET HIM!

We’ll still be here when you are done, and you’ll have the satisfaction of seeing some clandestine trade offers coming your way by those league mates who are currently sporting palm-sized welts on their foreheads.

LaPorta is getting the attention because he was the golden child of last year’s draft. Some might say he wields a better stick and we I might not disagree with that assessment.  However, almost everyone is or has talked about LaPorta meaning he will be harder to get; in fact he is likely already gone.

You guys need to jump on this kid’s bandwagon with both feet now because I have a very good feeling there won't be much room on that wagon at the end of this year.  He has raised his production while moving up a level, and that spells fantasy studliness to us here at RotoExperts.
