Diamond in the Rough 4/17/08
2B Chris Coghlan, 23 (R) Carolina Mudcats (Florida Marlins, AA) This week our man is Chris Coghlan, who plays second base for the Florida Marlins double-A affiliate Carolina Mudcats. Chris Coghlan's first full season stats were 115 games, a .287 batting average in 435 AB, 77 Runs, 125 hits, 31 doubles, 7 triples, 12 HR, 82 RBI, 62 walks, 62 strike outs, 24 stolen bases and 5 caught stealing. He did struggle a bit after being promoted to high-A Jupiter for 34 games (130 AB's). He still had 10 extra base hits, 18 RBI, 15 BB, 19 SO and 5 SB. He plays a position (2B) that is pretty deep right now in fantasy baseball, but not with power and speed. Who doesn't like a middle infielder with the potential to be a 20/20 man. How long will the Marlins hold on to Dan Uggla? Chris needs to make some strides this year in double-A and show his slump in high-A was a fluke. He is starting the year off on the right foot hitting to the tune of a .357 BA in 11 games with 9 runs scored, a home run, 6 stolen bases, 4 walks and only 3 strike outs. The BB/K ratio tells me he could stay a .300 hitter as he advances. Who doesn't want a fantasy second baseman hitting .300 with 20+ HR and 20+ SB? This is someone you better take notice of this year. A big year at double-AA will send his stock soaring.
