Diamond in the Rough 4/22/08
Max Scherzer, 23 (RHP), Tucson Sidewinders (Arizona Diamondbacks, AAA) This week our man is Max Scherzer, a 23 year old right handed starter for the Arizona Diamondbacks Triple-A affiliate. Max is a little bit different than the guys I have profiled so far here; he was a first round pick in 2006. The reason I picked him this week is he can make an immediate impact for your fantasy team when he is called up this year. He can give you a solid ERA, WHIP, an above average number of strike outs and he plays for a good enough offensive team that wins should be there too. I haven't heard much talk of him this year which is a shame because the impact he has this year could be similar to what Clay Bucholz did for fantasy teams down the stretch last year. This year in Triple-A, he has dominated to the tune of 17 innings pitched and 29 strike outs. He has only given up 7 hits, 3 walks and 1 unearned run. That's right- 17 innings- zero earned runs and 29 K's. Guys who don't know his name better learn it before someone else in your league does.
