The Arizona Fall League is a smorgasbord of young talent for fantasy baseball owners.  Bill Root tells you which prospects in the fall league are future stars, diamonds in the rough, and contributors in 2009.

PEORIA SAGUAROS PREVIEW

(Organizational Affiliations: St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres, and Chicago White Sox)

Star Power:
2007 first-round draft pick Aaron Poreda (SP, CWS) has a blistering fastball and is off to a fantastic start to his professional career.  Poreda needs to master his secondary pitches if he wants to increase his strikeout totals.  Poreda's command and solid groundball/flyball ratio (1.39 in 2008) point to future success in the majors.  This towering lefty should make it to the starting rotation in Chi-town by late 2009, and Ozzie Guillen should curse him out for some irrational reason by early 2010.  Just one man’s prediction.

Gordon Beckham (SS, CWS) put on an absolute show in the College World Series as a one-man wrecking crew.   He is an all-around player with great plate discipline and the ability to hit for power and contact.  In 58 at-bats in Low-A, Beckham hit .310 with 3 HRs.  Some say Beckham will not hit for enough power to be a star in the major leagues.  I disagree.  Beckham hit 28 HRs as a junior for the Georgia Bulldogs.  There is no reason he will not be able to translate at least some of that power to the professional game.  Beckham will be a dynamite fantasy player whether he ends up at short, second, or third.  Obviously, his fantasy stock goes up if he stays in the middle infield.  The AFL will be Beckham's coming-out party.  Roster him now and you will not regret it.

The Padres Kyle Blanks (1B, SDP) is an absolute monster in stature at 6'6" and 270 lbs.  More importantly, he is a beast at the plate as well.  Despite the similarity in height, do not compare him to Richie Sexson.  Nah, Blanks has muscle on him and he actually swings with his eyes open.  The impressive thing about Blanks is that he is not your typical bomb or bust power hitter.  Sure, Blanks had 20 HRs at Double-A this year, but he also hit .320 and had a .404 OBP.  The Padres will find room for this kid sooner or later.  You should find room for him on your fantasy squad now.

You should also keep an eye on 2008 draft pick Brett Wallace (3B, STL) during his stint in the AFL.  Wallace started his professional career like a man possessed.  In 202 ABs between Low-A and Double-A, Wallace hit .337 with 8 HRs and a .957 OPS.  There is still a possibility that Wallace is shifted to the outfield, but this is a bat you cannot ignore no matter where he plays.  The Cardinals will move him quickly through their system.

Instant Impact:
Daniel Murphy (3B, NYM) reached the majors in 2008 and should be in the starting lineup for the Mets come Opening Day 2009.  Murphy had an excellent minor league season between three levels.  He continued that success during his major league debut.  The Mets have announced that Murphy will play second base in the AFL.  The team has openly expressed its dissatisfaction with Luis Castillo, and may try to move him in the off-season to open up a spot for Murphy in the middle of the diamond.  Based on the lack of quality bats at second base in the National League, Murphy's fantasy stock would skyrocket if his potent bat was moved to that position.

Diamonds in the Rough:
Justin Thole (C, NYM) busted out offensively this season in A-ball.  Thole hit .300 and posted an OBP of .382.  The only knock on him is his power, though he did hammer out 25 doubles.  If this 22 year-old catcher develops just a little more pop and continues to get on base at this clip, he will shoot up the prospect lists.  Fantasy owners should follow his development as he plays a premium position.

You also want to follow the development of Tobi Stoner (SP, NYM).  Stoner was impressive in High-A this year, posting a 2.60 ERA and a fabulous 48:9 K/BB ratio.  He struggled at Double-A, but is worth tracking because he also had some success at lower levels.

Missed all of 2008 season after surgery for a torn labrum in his left hip; while he can miss a few bats, gives up too many hits and walks to ever be an effective major league pitcher.

Despite some poor numbers in 2007 and 2008, the Nats view him as a potential closer of the future, so you must pay attention to him; of course how valuable is a Nats' closer anyway?

Beckham is worth the hype; this college standout has the sweet swing, plate discipline and intangibles to be a star for the White Sox and your fantasy team; I expect him to be on the fast track to Chicago and entrenched as a starting infielder by 2010.
Kyle Blanks1BSDP22.1AA.3251324927516023520107253519054.404.514.918
A 6'6'', 270lb monster who draws walks and can hit for average; some have questioned his power, although 14 HRs in second half of 2008 silenced the critics; the tools are here, but does he have a position in San Diego?

Wallace is one of the best pure hitters on any AFL roster with his short and compact stroke; the Cardinals 2008 first round pick was just stellar in his first pro season; he might not stay at third base given his frame.

Stefan GartrellOFCWS24.7AA.2541224095410422214521724510671.334.421.755
Nothing stands out about Gartrell; he is probably on the team to keep his former college teammate Aaron Poreda in good spirits; I do not see much of a fantasy future.

Awful start to Double-A season, but rebounded and was called up by Padres; could be Padres shortstop of future if Khalil Greene leaves, but would be nothing more than a back-up on other teams.
Chad HuffmanOFSDP23.4AA.28411943768124301958183678311.383.419.802
Impressive plate discipline; power inhibited by tough park; needs to improve against right-handed pitching; ceiling is most likely a platoon outfielder.

Undersized and somewhat underrated; struggled at Triple-A after stint as a hitting machine in Double-A; the type of guy Tony LaRussa likes to use in his lineup on a periodic basis.
