RotoExperts was conceptualized in 2007 on a warm spring day in St. Petersburg Florida at the draft table for the Tampa Bay Live NL Only Auction draft. Sitting at the table were 11 extreme fantasy baseball fanatics, including a writer for several major fantasy sites, an MLB Datacaster, a team sports physician, the owner of a fantasy draft tool and other equally insane fantasy baseball addicts. I don't recall who started the conversation, but at one point someone said "You know, with the brain trust we have sitting at this table, we could create our own fantasy web site." As smack talk flew and beer flowed, a whimsical conversation ensued about who would do what and what such an undertaking would entail, and by the end of the day as we all walked away from the table it seemed a fantasy in its own right. But not to me. I've played fantasy sports for many years, including dozens of expert leagues. One thought nagged me for weeks after the draft. Why Not? I've met and competed against some brilliant players over the last few years who are at least as well-versed in the intricacies of fantasy baseball and football as guys on many of the more well-known sites. For some, writing for a fantasy sports web site is merely a dream, a topic to banter about in league message boards and at draft tables while liberal libations are downed. The thing is, I had a similar dream in 2004. Someone from one of my leagues, commenting on the stories I posted on our league web page, said I should write for CBS Sportsline. I thought then, why not? That year I started writing for Tony Holm at Fantasy Sharks. That year I was a Fantasy Sports Writer Association finalist in two categories, including Most Humorous Fantasy Football Article. One of the other finalists was Matt Berry from Talented Mr. Roto. In 2005, my column "Around the NFC" appeared as part of a content deal with Matt Berry's Talented Mr. Roto organization on CBS Sportsline. It was a reward for finishing second to Christopher Harris in Matt's Open Pen II competition. My work was nominated for another FSWA award. All because I asked myself the question...why not? So I started searching for a name. Just for fun. I mentioned my search to a friend and he IM'd me a bit later. "Dude, RotoExperts.com is available." I bought the URL that day. It languished for months as we tossed the idea around. Did we really want to take this on? I thought about the many talented writers I'd met, and players who weren't great writers but excelled in drafting and team management. Now, with the help of some of those same brilliant people, we are launching RotoExperts.com. It won't be pretty, not for a while. We have a lot to learn about the content management system, and anyone who has ever run a web site will tell you it is a lot of work. Now that the site is live we hope you'll join us and help us build the best fantasy sports site on the planet. When deciding what our mission was, one of my partners said that should be our goal. You know what I said. Why not? We want this site to be the home for beginning fantasy player and real enthusiast alike. Beginners will find plenty of help for them to dominate their leagues and become seasoned pros. For the real enthusiast, the person who thinks he is better, smarter, more agile and more informed than the average big site writers and experts, we want to be a resource, but more importantly to be a place for you to share your experience and knowledge. As we grow we will roll out tools for you to express your views and share your knowedge, with the goal of making this the top destination for fantasy fans. We are doing this with one goal in mind. We want to challenge the best and brightest, at all levels, with our eyes cast firmly at the big prize. A place at a Tout Wars draft table. In 2004, writing for a fantasy site was nothing more than a fantasy. For one of my partners, working in MLB in some capacity was just a dream. Today we both have accomplished those dreams, so this site makes perfect sense. If you are interested in taking the next step, from dream to reality, we want to hear from you. Maybe you want to write. Maybe you are a Sabermetric genius, or a draft strategy whiz. Maybe you have experience as an editor, or have some other skill or talent that you feel would contribute to creating the Best Damned Fantasy Sports Website. One caveat. You'll be on the same pay scale we are on. There isn't one. We aren't expecting the riches to flow like milk and honey, certainly not for a while. Anything we can generate will be plowed back into making this site rock. Some of you will make the cut, and like us, get added to the payroll. When there is a payroll to be added to anyway. Remember that we are likely to break a few things along the way. Graphics may look strange and punctuation could be a bit funky, but that's just putty and nails and paint. In the mean time, we'll want you to kick the boxes out of the way and join us as we talk about the important things in life....Sports! Ben Ice Managing Partner RotoExperts.com
