MLB Best Bets Today: Tuesday’s Top 3 Betting Picks
Best Bet: Athletics +125
Where to Watch Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels
- Ballpark: Angel Stadium
- Location: Anaheim, CA
- Where to Watch: FDSW, NBCS-CA
- Time: 9:38 p.m. ET
- Spread: LAA -1.5 | Total: 9
- Moneyline: LAA -150 | ATH +125
The Los Angeles Angels have vastly overachieved relative to preseason prognostications. Heading into tonight’s matchup versus the Athletics, the Halos are hovering close to the .500 mark and just 5.0 games back of the division lead. Unfortunately, their futures stock could take a hit after this intra-divisional battle.
The Angels send Jose Soriano to the bump on Tuesday night. While he is toting a respectable 4-5 record with a 4.11 ERA, Soriano’s metrics paint a much gloomier picture. The hard-throwing righty gives up a concerning amount of baserunners, allowing 1.59 walks and hits per inning pitched. Further, he ranks in the 35th percentile in several notable categories, including hard-hit rate, expected ERA, and average exit velocity.
The A’s are primed to take advantage of Soriano in tonight’s AL West tilt. While pitching can be a limiting factor, the Athletics’ bats have been operating efficiently lately. Over the last two weeks, they sit 11th in OPS and homers, contributing to the seventh-most runs.
Betting the over is a tempting proposition; however, we can’t look past the value on the underdog visitors in this one. We’re making a play on the Athletics.

Best Bet: Padres -110
Where to Watch Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Diego Padres
- Ballpark: PETCO Park
- Location: San Diego, CA
- Where to Watch: SDPA and SportsNet LA
- Time: 9:40 p.m. ET
- Spread: LAD -1.5 | Total: 8
- Moneyline: LAD -110 | SDP -110
Two NL West foes continue their hated rivalry as the San Diego Padres host the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night. LA took the series opener in dramatic fashion, but we expect the Friars to punch back in tonight’s heavyweight bout.
As inferred by the betting price, Dylan Cease is pitching much better than his record implies. The former Cy Young runner-up is pitching over a full point above his expected ERA of 3.67. Further, he continues to rank as one of the top strikeout pitchers in the bigs. Cease sits in the 81st percentile or higher in chase, whiff, and strikeout rates.
Aiding his cause, the Dodgers are also much less effective as the visitors. LA’s OPS drops over 100 points on the road, contributing to fewer runs and a less efficient offense. While they overcame those deficits on Monday night, we expect quick and unforgiving regression tonight.
After a tepid stretch, the Padres’ bats showed signs of coming to life in the series opener. That ascent continues in this one, with San Diego poised to get back in the win column at home.
Best Bet: WAS-NYM Under 7.5 +100
Where to Watch Washington Nationals vs. New York Mets
- Ballpark: Citi Field
- Location: Queens, NY
- Where to Watch: SNY, MASN
- Time: 7:10 p.m. ET
- Spread: NYM -1.5 | Total: 7.5
- Moneyline: NYM -155 | WAS +130
The Washington Nationals and New York Mets take to the field for the series opener of a three-game set. Both pitchers have dazzled lately, and the pitching-friendly confines of Citi Field should help this one stay under the total.
Mackenzie Gore takes the ball for the Nats. Gore’s five-pitch mix should play well in Queens. The former third-overall pick ranks in the 73rd percentile in opponent expected batting average, which is a contributing factor to his top-end ERA. Moreover, he allows just 1.14 walks and hits per inning pitched while striking out 35.5% of the batters he faces.
Likewise, Griffin Canning hasn’t given up more than three earned runs in any of his last nine. Across that sample, he’s allowing an improved 1.18 WHIP while delivering a 51.8% groundball rate.
Don’t expect fireworks in this NL East battle. Gore and Canning will both excel en route to a lower-than-anticipated offensive battle at Citi Field.
