When asked about his injury Porzingis replied, “It’s been like that for a while.” He then went on to say that his declining shooting performance has nothing to do with the elbow soreness, saying that head coach Jeff Hornacek told him he needs to “just get it a little higher. We worked on it in the summer and he told me sometimes I’m a little too flat with my shot.”
Some reports even say that Porzingis’ elbow has swollen to the size of a golf ball. And while he claims it isn’t the reason for his recent shooting troubles, Inside Injuries has an optimal recovery time of at least a week for even the most minor of injuries to a forward’s shooting elbow. If he doesn’t take the time to heal, there is an increased risk of further injury to his elbow and a potentially longer recovery time.
Porzingis has been on the bench recently recovering from an Achilles injury, but the elbow swelling is more likely the cause of his under-performance. Since he’s been back on the court, Porzingis has been unable to come close to his season average of 18.8 points per game. He’s been 3-of-11 and 4-of-11 in his past two games and his performance warranted a one on one film session with Hornacek. Unless Porzingis takes the time to rest his elbow, his shooting performance will continue to be affected.
