2017 Fantasy Football: Week 16 Waiver Wire Pickups

RotoExperts Staff December 19, 2017 12:01AM EST
This is it. The Week 16 Waiver Wire pickups bring a close to the season – at least for waivers. The season flew by, and I’ll include some Week 17 RB look-aheads just in case you are crazy enough to play in a league with a Week 17 championship (you shouldn’t… ever).

Week 16 Waiver Wire Pickups: QBs – Quarterback Streamers

Nick Foles, PHI (26%) – I told you. What a way to kick off the waiver piece, huh? Okay, I’m not really going to sit here and say, “Haha, I told ya so,” (again)…

Foles did exactly what he said he would, and that’s come out slinging. Congrats if you had the guts to start him in Week 15, and now, Foles gets the Raiders – at home! – for the championship.

Blake Bortles, JAX (54%) – Foles being at home gives him the slight edge over Bortles. Look, I know Bortles can go full pumpkin on us at any given time, but he now has four straight games with 22-plus points and at least 16 in all but one game since Week 7. The 49ers are nearly as good a matchup as the Raiders too.

Jimmy Garoppolo, SF (30%) – If it wasn’t against the Jaguars’ defense, Garoppolo would be a much better option with 293, 334 and 381 passing yards in his three starts… but… just two touchdowns still.

Jameis Winston, TB (54%) – Winston shows signs of life against the Falcons defense on Monday night. Fortunately, the Panthers’ pass defense gives him the opportunity to put up back-to-back quality games, as they have been rather weak against the pass in the second half of the season.

Eli Manning, NYG (33%) – So, there is apparently still life left in Manning. The Cardinals matchup is a favorable one, but how much do you want to trust Manning with Sterling Shepard and company when Patrick Peterson could eliminate Shepard from the conversation?

Tyrod Taylor, BUF (38%) – Taylor doesn’t have the best history against the Patriots, but here’s hoping for the value in his legs and some garbage time.

Week 16 Waiver Wire Pickups: RBs

James White, NE (51%) – With Rex Burkhead sidelined, you can feel confident in trusting Dion Lewis and not have a second thought, but White also becomes interesting again in PPR leagues. Don’t forget that White had put up double-digit PPR scores in five of the six games from Weeks 4-10. As for those of you asking about Mike Gillislee, stop. No, stop. You really going to plug Gillislee in for your championship game? STAHP.

Peyton Barber, TB (34%) – Doug Martin was inactive for the game against the Falcons with Barber controlling the backfield. He’s a tough runner, although the matchup with the Panthers’ run defense isn’t favorable.

Mike Davis, SEA (48%) – Davis had 16 and 15 carries for 64 and 66 yards the two weeks prior to that Seahawks meltdown against the Rams. He’s still the lead option and best talent at running back for the Seahawks, and they should have more success against the Cowboys this week.

Giovani Bernard, CIN (47%) – This is only if Joe Mixon is still sidelined due to his concussion. If so, the Bengals host the Lions, and while the Bengals look like a Pop Warner team, 15-plus touches for Bernard carries Fantasy value.

Kerwynn Williams, ARI (35%) – You might need to turn to Elijhaa Penny (0%) if Williams is out, but the Cardinals host the Giants this week, and that Giants defense couldn’t stop me. Okay, I’d end up looking like a six-year-old’s G.I. Joe toy, missing leg and all, but you get the point.

Wayne Gallman, NYG (5%) – I’ve listed Gallman here for a few weeks.

The Giants have been looking to next year, Gallman continues to outplay Orleans Darkwa and has 13 catches in the last two games with 40 receiving yards in each. Gallman jumps above Bernard (if Mixon is back) and Penny (if Williams is out; a healthy Williams gets the edge over Gallman).

Aaron Jones, GB (26%) – If Brett Hundley is back at quarterback, I prefer Jamaal Williams still. If Aaron Rodgers plays another week though, Jones saw his highest snap count in weeks and appears to be the preferred choice with Rodgers at quarterback. I’d look to avoid Williams and Jones against the Vikings though.

Rod Smith, DAL (24%) – I wouldn’t want to risk Smith getting a big play or a touchdown with the Seahawks being the toughest team for pass-catching running backs and Ezekiel Elliott back, but you might be in a bind.

Week 17 Potential: Chris Ivory, T.J. Yeldon, JAX; Fitzgerald Toussaint, PIT; Corey Clement, PHI; Matt Breida, SF

Week 16 Waiver Wire Pickups: WRs

Martavis Bryant, PIT (55%) – While Antonio Brown might return for the Steelers’ playoffs, he won’t be around for yours. JuJu Smith-Schuster becomes the must-own and must-start option, but Bryant becomes intriguing as well. The Texans are the best matchup for receivers and big plays, and if there is one thing Bryant can do well, it’s run that nine route and make big plays.

Dede Westbrook and Keelan Cole, JAX (44%) – Marqise Lee will miss Week 16, and Allen Hurns sounds unlikely to return. That leaves Westbrook and Week 15 star, Cole, as the Jaguars top two receivers. If Blake Bortles keeps rolling in another good matchup, Westbrook and Cole are both interesting plays with Westbrook leading the way.

Randall Cobb, GB (53%) – I can’t see Davante Adams playing in Week 16 after suffering his third concussion, meaning Jordy Nelson will draw Xavier Rhodes “closed.” Whether it’s Rodgers or Hundley at quarterback, Cobb should see plenty of opportunities in this situation and has a touchdown in two of the last three games. I’d move Cobb to No. 1 in PPR if Rodgers is playing but that seems highly unlikely with the Falcons’ win.

Kendall Wright, CHI (4%) – How’s this for Wright’s last two games: 24 targets, 17 receptions and 188 yards. The Bears face the Browns in Week 16 in one of the most favorable matchups of the week. Wright is a better PPR option.

Mike Wallace, BAL (40%) – Wallace doesn’t have many touchdowns, but he’s been on a decent roll the past three weeks with 116, 72 and 89 yards. Last week was a great matchup for Wallace (Browns) and this week is too with the Colts coming to town. I prefer Wallace to Wright in Non-PPR.

Damiere Byrd, CAR (0%) – One butt cheek apparently equals two feet, as Byrd scored (twice) in Week 15.

The Panthers have been looking for their second option alongside Devin Funchess and have found it. Oh, and the Panthers host the Buccaneers and their nonexistent pass defense.

Roger Lewis, NYG (1%) – With Sterling Shepard likely nullified by Patrick Peterson, someone will have to step up for Manning and the Giants. Fortunately, secondary receivers have dominated the Cardinals, and Lewis becomes intriguing with Tavarres King nursing an injury and 21 targets (11 receptions) the past two weeks. Nevertheless, this is a desperation play for the championship week.

Week 16 Waiver Wire Pickups: TEs

Eric Ebron, DET (43%) – He’s the Blake Bortles of tight ends. Even with him playing well, do you really want to trust Ebron with your title on the line? Alas, the Bengals defense is in shambles and Ebron has 18 targets, 15 receptions, 127 yards and a touchdown the past two weeks.

Jesse James, PIT (24%) – If Vance McDonald is out, James is in line for a bump in targets with Antonio Brown also sidelined. The Texans allow the fifth most points to tight ends, and that was a catch.

Ricky Seals-Jones, ARI (33%) – Yes, Pickle Ricky Seals-Jones came up short last week, but it’s the Giants. They’re allowing 12.4 Non-PPR and 17.9 PPR FPPG with 13 touchdowns to tight ends. That was a lot of P’s.

Benjamin Watson, BAL (14%) – The upside of Watson is with the touchdowns in two of the last three games. The downside is the goose egg in Week 14. Al least the Colts are weak against the tight end… well… everything.

Charles Clay, BUF (32%) – Clay showed up for just the second time since Week 4, and it’s not the best matchup for tight ends, but beggars can’t be choosers and all that jazz… hold on, why isn’t it spelled “beggers”? English, man. It can be tough.

I got more of these… make sure you come back for the rankings tomorrow :)

Trey Burton, PHI (8%) – Even with Zach Ertz back, Burton still got his share, but he’s a touchdown prayer for deep leagues only… and Foles isn’t likely to go bonkers every week.
