Patriots, Running Back – Sony Michel vs. Rex Burkhead vs. James White vs. whoever else you want to throw in here
Bill Belichick strikes again. Fantasy owners should have been excited about Sony Michel’s rookie season but unfortunately the Patriots drafted him. There is Fantasy production to be had in this offense, but good luck figuring it out. Four different Patriot running backs had at least 15 red zone carries last season – Dion Lewis, Rex Burkhead, Mike Gillislee, and James White – with three of them scoring at least five touchdowns in that area of the field. Additionally, we have one other instance when the Belichick-led Patriots drafted a running back in the first round – Laurence Maroney back in 2006. He finished as RB28 that season, rushing for 745 yards and six touchdowns. Finally, Michel had a fumbling issue in college, something that will not sit well with Belichick. According to NFL Draft Scout, he fumbled the ball once every 54.6 touches while the average for a running back prospect is once every 124.5 touches. This is a better situation to draft in best ball formats, where the decisions are made for you. Michel must also show he is fully recovered from a preseason knee injury, and former Bengal Jeremy Hill has also forced himself into the mix.
Prediction: Incredibly frustrating. Michel and Burkhead split early-down duties while White is the passing-down back. If Burkhead gets hurt, that’s how Michel will achieve his ultimate upside and vice versa.
