2018 Fantasy Football Running Back Handcuffs

When it comes to running the football, the landscape has changed in the NFL over the past decade or so. It used to be a majority of teams would start one true running back. The Emmitt Smith or Barry Sanders type of backs, one that will play all three downs. In today’s NFL, teams may employ a variety of backs. One back to run the ball on first and second down. A second back that is a better blocker in obvious pass situations and/or one that can catch the ball well out of the backfield. There could even be a third that is the short yardage or goal line back. What I’m trying to say is that there may not be many true handcuffs anymore. We all know in Fantasy Football that there just aren’t enough running backs to go around. So even if you view a back as a handcuff, another owner may look at that back as a possible starter during bye weeks, or if they have waited to draft a running back, may be looking to hit pay dirt in the case of injury. This column will look at the running back depth chart for each team.

Arizona Cardinals: David Johnson is back after missing most of last season due to a wrist injury. Johnson is 100-percent healthy and a likely Top 5 overall pick in drafts this year. If you believe you need insurance just in case Johnson were to miss time again, this is a situation in which the backup running back is a true handcuff, and that back is Chase Edmonds. Proceed with caution here however as his only value will be in case of injury to Johnson. He shouldn’t be drafted until right before defenses and kickers.
