Way-Too-Early 2020 NFL Fantasy Football Rankings

Last week, I did massive overload of my Dynasty NFL fantasy football rankings  but I know that many of you do not play that format and are already starting to think about how you can win your redraft league in 2020. There are some real strategic reasons to start thinking about 2020 NFL Fantasy Football Rankings already in January. The first is that if you have a clear starting point for your rankings and how you think of the league moving forward, you’ll have a better starting point to think about how NFL free agency and the draft will change the picture. A great example would be the Kansas City Chiefs backfield; we have Damien Williams still ranked in the top 30 of running backs and are projecting LeSean McCoy to not be on the team. If the Chiefs sign Derrick Henry or draft Travis Etienne, then obviously Williams’ ranking changes but you have a clear picture of how he would slide into your rankings.

The second and maybe more important reason to start thinking about rankings this early is that you will lose some of the latent information you picked up watching football this year over the next six months. Owning James Conner was actually a huge pain because of his propensity to leave games, even if he is still installed as the starter next year. Curtis Samuel has horribly disappointing year-end numbers relative to DJ Moore and Christian McCaffrey but was maybe one of the most unlucky WR’s in terms of Air Yards conversion in 2019. These examples, in and of themselves, are not all that important but the information that you have retained in your brain right now about the 2019 NFL season is pretty important to how fantasy teams should be constructed in 2020. You will forget a lot of that tertiary information over the next six months but some of those data patterns can carry over if you start thinking about rankings and drafting right now.
