Broncos Case Keenum, Titans Jonnu Smith Among Sneaky Plays for Week 2

Broncos Case Keenum, Titans Jonnu Smith Among Sneaky Plays for Week 2
Brandon Murchison September 12, 2018 10:27AM EST
A look at some sneaky plays for Week 2

QB

Case Keenum vs. Oakland Raiders

Keenum’s first game as a Denver Bronco can be deemed successful after a 329-yard, three-touchdown performance. Granted, he also threw three interceptions in Week 1, but the upcoming matchup against a suspect Raiders secondary could lead to juicy statistics in Week 2. With both Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders looking rejuvenated this past week, I expect Keenum to take full advantage of the Raiders’ secondary to the tune of another 300-yard day with at least two touchdowns. He should again post QB1 numbers this week and is a candidate to use in a stack in your DFS lineups with either receiver. In season-long formats, you should take advantage of these early season matchups for Keenum and then look to deal him away while his price is at its highest.

RB

Corey Clement @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

You can call this a hunch for Week 2, but after the performance that Jay Ajayi put on in Week 1, I can see Doug Pederson throwing a curveball and giving more snaps to Clement here. With only 13 snaps in Week 1, Clement will be on fresh legs and if the Bucs’ offense shows up yet again, Clement could be a sneaky play in PPR formats. He could be more involved in the passing attack, giving you a four- to five-catch day, along with adequate numbers on the ground. If you are in a pinch due to injuries after Week 1, perhaps Clement is available on your waiver wire for pickup. Grab him and plug him into your Flex position and don’t be shocked to see him score well in Week 2. He will also be virtually free on DFS sites for this week as well, allowing you to spend up at other positions.

WR

Cole Beasley vs. New York Giants

Yes, the Cowboys’ offense looked completely inept in Week 1, so why would I be suggesting a receiver from this offense as a play for Week 2? Simply put, it’s due to the matchup. Cowboys-Giants games, especially on Sunday nights, are typically back and forth affairs. Also, you may not have known, but Beasley quietly hauled in seven catches for 73 yards on eight targets in Week 1, leading the team. I expect to see this again in Week 2 as teams continue to load up on Ezekiel Elliott and put the pressure on Dak Prescott to win games. Don’t be surprised to see Beasley bring in another six catches this week while getting one in the end-zone. If you’re looking for a matchup play for a WR3 in seasonal formats, Beasley could be your go-to. In DFS, he will be a low-owned option on the cheap that could pay off big.

TE

Jonnu Smith vs. Houston Texans

With Delanie Walker now done for the year, Jonnu Smith now steps into the coveted role as tight end for the Titans. Smith is a player that the Titans’ coaching staff has been high on for quite some time, now they get their chance to see what he has. In a home matchup against the Texans in Week 2, things are looking positive for nice stat day for Smith. The Texans had one of the worst Week 1 performances against the tight end position. Sure, it was against Rob Gronkowski, but the Titans can still take advantage of the game film. Look for the Titans to try and keep Marcus Mariota clean and get the ball out of his hands quickly, which could mean a lot of throws over the middle of the field to Smith. I expect to see Smith targeted a minimum of seven times on Sunday, hauling in five passes for 65 yards and a score. Definitely worth grabbing off the waiver wire, especially if you lost Walker, and plugging into your lineup. He should provide TE1 numbers in any format and will also be a free option in your DFS lineups.

DEF

New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins

Sure, the Dolphins looked halfway competent on offense in Week 1, but that was against a Titans defense that is just not very good at the moment. Now going on the road to play the Jets in Week 2, I see the Dolphins laying an egg in this game. The Jets’ defense isn’t terrible; it can get after the quarterback and force a turnover, something I expect to see in Week 2. The game should be low-scoring, allowing the Jets’ defense to be aggressive and rack up points. They should be a good streaming option this week and a cheaper option in DFS.
