The Best Buy Low and Sell High Targets for Week Nine

The NFL trade passed Tuesday at 4pm EST. Normally this would not be a big deal as this deadline is unlike the MBL, NHL, or NBA deadlines, where there could be multiple deals. That seems to be slowly changing in the NFL as teams are realizing the benefit to dumping players they weren’t planning on keeping long-term anyway for draft picks. Why do I bring this up? Le’Veon Bell has stated that he doesn’t want the Steelers to trade him. Well, he assured that by not reporting before the deadline. The Steelers couldn’t trade him unless he signed his franchise tender. If he does report this week, he will be a headache for those Fantasy owners that have him and/or James Conner on their rosters. This week  may be the last days for those owners to make up their mind about trading one or the other. Conner has been spectacular. You can make an argument that he’s the league’s MVP, at least in the non-Todd Gurley/Pat Mahomes group. What will the Steelers do when Bell returns, and they deem him ready to play? Even if you have both players on your roster, this will still be a tough decision each week. Bell is still the better NFL running back, but he has never put up the Fantasy numbers that Conner has. If you own one or both and can get a fair offer, it would be awfully tempting to move on and alleviate that headache each week.

In this column we will take a quick look at three players who are buy lows, three that are sell highs, three that you’d like to deal but can’t get equal value for, and three you should hold.

Buy Low

  1. Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots: Yeah, he doesn’t look good. Gronk had another pedestrian game Monday, but it wasn’t all his fault. Tom Brady missed him for what would’ve been an easy TD and several other passes from Brady were off the mark. A Gronk owner may be willing to sell him for cents on the dollar. Gronk isn’t a sure thing by any means. The ankle and back injuries look legit, but if you can get him for a song, he’s still worth the risk.
  2. J. Moore, Carolina Panthers: I’m just looking at upside here. Moore is the type of explosive receiver the Panthers need. Devin Funchess and Greg Olsen run like they are trapped in a tar pit. Someone has to make defenses afraid and that person is Moore. Cam Newton is performing well under OC Norv Turner. Newton is more accurate than he ever has been. Now if he can just make those defenses fear the deep ball.
  3. David Johnson, Arizona Cardinals: I admit, still not thrilled that Johnson only touched the ball 20 times Sunday. That needs to be about 25 percent higher, but he did have his second-best yardage total of the season and new OC Bryon Leftwich has to know that if he wants to keep his job long-term, he must use his best weapon. If a Johnson owner has had enough and is willing to sell at below market value, I’m willing to buy in.

Sell High

  1. Amari Cooper, Dallas Cowboys: I’m a Cowboys fan and there are plenty of them out there. If you own Cooper and there is a Cowboys fan in your league or anyone who is on the Cooper bandwagon, I’d see what you can get for him. Football fans can be delusional. Yes, Cooper has a lot of talent, but he’s going to a new team, will have to learn a new offense, get some chemistry with Dak Prescott, and the Cowboys will have to change their offensive philosophy. Does anyone else think this is quite a bit to ask Cooper to do before he plays his first game in a Cowboys suniform? There is a reason teams have multiple mini-camps and a long training camp. You can’t just learn and perform in an offense in 10-14 days. I leave you with this on Cooper. When was the last time a WR was traded mid-season and had a productive run for his new team?
  2. Tyreek Hill, Kansas City Chiefs: Hill suffered a groin injury Sunday. Groins can be tricky, and Hill could miss time or be at less than full strength for a little while. Hill is not your prototypical WR. He’s not someone who is going to run crisp routes and make a plethora of catches. Hill is a threat to take the ball to the house every time he has the ball in his hands, but if his groin limits his explosiveness, then his Fantasy owners may be in for a hard fall.
  3. Marlon Mack, Indianapolis Colts: I know what you’re thinking, I’m nuts for putting Mack on this list. Listen, I like Mack, have him in a league or two, but he’s always on the injured list, and after two great weeks against two terrible teams, if I can get someone to give me a Top 10 RB or Top 20 overall player for his services, I’m pulling the trigger on a more reliable player.

No Value

  1. Allen Robinson, Chicago Bears: Robinson missed the game Sunday with a groin injury. He had 10 receptions in Week Two. In the other weeks combined he has had only 15 receptions. It’s just not working with Robinson in Chicago. Not yet anyway. Perhaps he’s not over the knee injury from last season or maybe that chemistry with Mitchell Trubisky isn’t there yet. Either way, unless you can find someone who wants to pay for the name value, you’re stuck.
  2. Doug Baldwin, Seattle Seahawks: Baldwin seems to be over the knee injuries that plagued him during the pre-season and the early parts of this season, but the numbers still aren’t there. The ‘Hawks are also running the ball more than they have in the past. Russell Wilson only threw the ball 17 times in the victory over the Lions on Sunday. Baldwin just may not have many opportunities to succeed.
  3. Javorius Allen, Baltimore Ravens: Allen was barely usable in PPR leagues before Ty Montgomery was acquired. He has no value now. Montgomery is a better player than Allen and will take over that role as soon as he is acclimated in the offense, as soon as Week 10

Hold

  1. Lamar Miller, Houston Texans: Who has given the smelling salts to Miller? He has rushed for at least 100 yards in each of the last two games. The Texans offense looks like it’s about to take off again with Deshaun Watson back at full strength. I thought about putting Miller on the sell-high part of this list also and would certainly move him if you can get full price, but I’m no longer just giving him away. It’s amazing how fast judgments can change in the NFL.
  2. DeSean Jackson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: D-Jax may want out of Tampa Bay but Fantasy owners should hope he stays. Ryan Fitzpatrick has been named the starting QB once again in Tampa and earlier this season we saw how much he loves throwing to D-Jax. The Bucs still have no defense and a limited ground game. D-Jax will have chances each week to catch the deep ball.
  3. Kenny Golladay, Detroit Lions: I’m not sure what is going on with Golladay the last two weeks. He has only been targeted three times by Matthew Stafford during that span and Sunday we saw the re-emergence of Marvin Jones back into the passing game. I’m holding onto Golladay, but not starting him. The trade of Golden Tate to the Philadelphia, even though he was the slot receiver, can only help.
