Fantasy Football ADP Duel: 49ers Jimmy Garoppolo vs. Lions Matthew Stafford

Fantasy Football ADP Duel: 49ers Jimmy Garoppolo vs. Lions Matthew Stafford
Brandon Murchison July 26, 2018 4:15AM EDT

The Fantasy Football QB Showdown between Top 10 QBs

During Fantasy Football drafts we are all faced with a tough decision at some point. Do you take the shot on the young, up-and-coming quarterback or the proven veteran? The answer to that question could be provided by how you build your roster. If you’re the type of owner that likes the risks, then the younger player with the higher upside might just be the guy to own. Other owners like to play it safe at the position and go with a quarterback that may not wow you in certain weeks. but has a very sturdy floor to rely on.

Jimmy Garoppolo and Matthew Stafford are two players that fit this bill. One is the young upstart that raised eyebrows with his play in limited action in 2017, while the other has been around for awhile and consistently finishes among the Top 10 at the position. But who should be your guy for 2018? Both are seeing their ADPs hover in the later stages of Round 7. The decision could be one that will help propel you to a championship run in 2018, but it could also send you spiraling into a position where you will be playing matchups on a weekly basis.

Jimmy Garoppolo: ADP of 83 on FantasyPros

Jimmy Garoppolo finally got out from under the shadow of Tom Brady in 2017 once he was dealt to the 49ers. He didn’t see the field until Week 13 in a starting role, but once he did, he became the talk of the Fantasy industry. During the final stretch of the season, Garoppolo finished eighth in Fantasy points at the position in his final five starts. He looked very poised and ready to lead the 49ers in a winning direction. The statistical output with the limited array of weapons at his disposal was most impressive. Marquise Goodwin and Trent Taylor aren’t exactly names to write home about, yet Garoppolo still showed he could get the job done.

He will be one of the more over-hyped players in all of Fantasy as we head into drafts. With only 272 pass attempts to his credit, the jury is still out on Garoppolo. Defenses could catch up to his tendencies and the lack of a strong group of weapons may be more of a hindrance than we want to admit. With Alfred Morris and Matt Breida, the team hopes to have the running presence needed to keep defenses from keying on the passing game entirely. If this offense can keep opposing teams on their toes it will only benefit the Fantasy value of Garoppolo. Even though the team believes in its receivers with Goodwin, a healthy Pierre Garcon and Taylor, keep an eye on the 49ers as a potential team to employ the services of Dez Bryant. The addition of a player the caliber of Bryant could be the piece needed to help Garoppolo reach the lofty expectations many Fantasy owners have for him going into the season.

Matthew Stafford: ADP 85

Matthew Stafford had a very inconsistent campaign in 2017. He would give you weeks in which he was single-handedly winning a matchup for you, but then the crippling weeks gave you nothing. It was easily his most frustrating season under Offensive Coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. Stafford seemed to play the more conservative role last season, not taking as many shots down the field, helping him finish with a career-low 10 interceptions. But the lack of deep ball attempts somewhat hindered his ceiling in Fantasy production. With a very talented one-two punch at receiver with Golden Tate and Marvin Jones, Stafford could beat a defense on either side of the field. The two receivers in this passing game and Stafford were all the Lions had in terms of offense, as once again the load rested squarely on the shoulders of the quarterback. But by the end of the season, his quarterback rating, touchdowns and depth of target were all up from a season prior, leading to a Top 10 finish at the position.

Looking ahead to 2018, the Lions have made a change at head coach with Matt Patricia. They have also looked to revamp a dormant running attack with the additions of LeGarrette Blount and rookie Kerryon Johnson. So obviously the goal of this new coaching staff is to take some pressure off Stafford and to become a more balanced team. But as long as Stafford and Cooter are working together, expect this passing attack to be one of the more prolific in the league. I expect Stafford to once again be among the league leaders in pass attempts by season’s end, giving him plenty of opportunities to provide value in Fantasy. He may not cross over the 30-touchdown threshold, but another 4,000 yard season will be easily obtainable.

Verdict

With these two quarterbacks virtually going one after another in drafts, this situation could easily present itself to you at some point as you look for your QB1. The selection between these two depends on if you like taking the risk of the young player with upside or the trusty veteran. Both have strength of schedules in the middle of the pack (49ers at 14th, Lions at 16th). The choice for me comes down to the supporting cast. While Garoppolo is an intriguing player, his receivers leave little to be desired. Stafford has the quality options in Tate and Jones with Kenny Golladay potentially on the rise in 2018 as well. Stafford has finished inside the Top 10 in quarterback scoring in each of the last three seasons. Give me the consistency of Stafford while not having to pay an arm and a leg in draft stock to acquire him.
