Fantasy Football: Week 8 Injuries – Megatron, Graham & Bush

RotoExperts Staff October 24, 2014 4:29PM EDT
FNTSY Sports Network’s Pat Mayo & Laura Diakun run through the top Week 8 Injuries; discuss how to approach Calvin Johnson and Reggie Bush in the 9:30am ET game, and how Theo Riddick becomes a sneaky fill in RB if Bush is inactive. They move onto Reggie Wayne and A.J Green’s status, which players will benefit in their absence and how Travaris Cadet is a quality PPR RB start with Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson’s questionable availability. The duo finishes debating whether you should start or sit Jimmy Graham, what to make of Shane Veeren’s flu-like symptoms and if Crockett Gillmore is an alternative you should consider if you were relying on Owen Daniels in Week 8?

Week 9: Pickups & FAAB Bids
Week 8 Ranks: FLEX & Starts | QB | RB | WR | TE & D/ST
Week 8: Spread Picks & Game Previews | FAAB Bids | RB Adds | WR Adds
Week 8: Injury Decisions | Ranks Debate | Bye Week Adds | Harvin Trade

UPDATE: Calvin Johnson and Reggie Bush are both inactive.

If Calvin Johnson is active I’ll be starting him. Yes, I’ve been burned by him twice already this year, but two things point to Megatron not simply being a decoy against the Falcons: 1) He practiced Friday. In both decoy games in 2014, that didn’t happen. 2) Lions go on bye next week. Why risk a set back when Johnson would be able to return at full strength in Week 10? He’s still questionable for Sunday, so make alternate plans either way. But, unless I had a slew of great options to plug into my lineup (unlikely if Johnson was your first round pick), I’d have him starting. And if you’ve been under a rock all week, Lions/Falcons starts at 9:30am ET. Remember that.

Despite his boast to the contraryReggie Bush is listed as doubtful for Detroit. If he can’t go, Joique Bell enters MUST START territory while Theo Riddick morphs into an interesting FLEX option. Again, you only have until 9:30am ET to make this move.

Week 8 Ranks: FLEX & Starts | QB | RB | WR | TE & D/ST
Week 8: Spread Picks & Game Previews | FAAB Bids | RB Adds | WR Adds
Week 8: Injury Decisions | Ranks Debate | Bye Week Adds | Harvin Trade

Jimmy Graham was a limited participant in Saints practice all week and just as little is known about his status against the Packers as there was seven days ago – ZOINKS – TO THE MYSTERY MACHINE, GANG!!! Don’t discredit Graham being limited to decoy duties, but I’d wager he’s closer to normal, awesome Jimmy Graham than the cardboard cutout trotted out against the Lions. There are exactly FOUR TEs I would start over him this week. The upside he can provide compared to the remainder of the tight end class is simply too enticing to pass on. If JIMMAYYY burns me, that, I can handle. Benching him and watching him go off while Charles Clay scores nothing in my starting lineup; that would result in a broken… something. More likely my spirits; but potentially my laptop – and I can’t afford to do that. Demand to know who those five TEs are? Then I suggest you consult the sequentially ordered list of players at the bottom of the page aka the Week 8 FLEX Rankings.

Now, it’s been rumored Zach Mettenburger’s been rooting for the Titans long before they started paying him to, but that’s irrelevant. The rookie’s starting under center for Tennessee against the Texans, and while he’s no great shakes, at least he’ll attempt to chuck the ball more than -4.3 yards downfield, unlike that awful Charlie WhitehurstKendall Wright’s still a starter in almost every PPR format, Delanie Walker gets a bump now that his bounty of targets may actually come within a 5-yard radius of his hands and Justin Hunter receives the biggest boost because of his ability to utilize Mettenberger’s laser-rocket arm. Hunter’s certainly not a trustworthy Week 8 option, but one with a significant ceiling.

Shonn Greene should really hire me to represent him. I’d have him cleared of his current troubles – POSTHASTE!!! All I would say is, “just look at his actions following getting busted for parking in that handicapped spot. It’s clear he merely left his permit hanging off the review mirror in one of his numerous other vehicles.” Case closed. Then I’d immediately countersue the the Nashville police department for harassment and distress damages. Hire Pat Mayo: I have your back – NO, money down!!!

Both unlucky Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson have each been declared inactive for Sunday Night Football. I have no comment on Mark Ingram other than I hate him. OHHHH, and that he’s the secret eighth terrace in Dante’s journey to The Earthy Paradise. Others feel differently, like SPECIAL GUEST RANKER, Juan ElwayTravaris Cadet however, I like him. He’s a low end RB2 in all PPR formats and a decent desperation plug-and-play in standard leagues.

Trent Richardson is a true game time decision against the Steelers. Devotees know I would never own TRICH, let alone consider starting him, but his absence transforms Ahmad Bradshaw into a fringe Top 10 RB for the week. Daniel Herron will likely snag 5-10 touches as well. Reggie Wayne’s out for the Colts too. I’ve moved Donte Moncrief up the rankings over Hakeem Nicks, but neither should be considered a safe option. Moncrief’s nothing more than a gamble in a deep league.

With the unholy triumvirate of DeAngelo WilliamsFozzy Whittaker and Chris Ogbonnaya already declared out against the Seahawks, Jonathan Stewart will have all the Panthers RB touches to himself. And, like always, will do nothing with him. The Daily Show’s quickly approaching the four year anniversary of his last 100 yard rushing game.

Owen Daniels had a knee scope Friday and will be absence against the Bengals. All-Name team co-captain Crockett Gillmore gets the start in his place. I actually kinda like Gillmore, despite knowing nothing about him outside of his hilarious name. But, the matchup couldn’t be better. Cincy’s ceding an average of 30 PPR PPG to tight ends over the past three weeks. If you need a warm body to occupy the TE slot on your team, I like Gillmore’s potential better than guys like Jace AmaroAustin Seferian-Jenkins and Jason Witten.
