Fantasy Hoops: Week 16 At A Glance

    RotoExperts Staff February 7, 2016 11:17AM EDT
Chicago Bulls swingman Jimmy Butler (knee) is likely out through the All-Star break after suffering a strained knee this past week, but the good news is that tests revealed he did not suffer any ligament damage. Fantasy owners in Week 16 will have to make do with Butler, who was Top 5 in scoring in the entire league in the month of January. With Butler on the shelf it will be veteran swingman Mike Dunleavy seeing some extra minutes, although he is just making his way back from back surgery and will have a minutes restriction. Gs E’Twaun Moore and Tony Snell will also have some short-term Fantasy appeal in deeper leagues, and will make for interesting DFS options in the final two games before the break.

Los Angeles Lakers F Julius Randle (ankle) suffered a sprained left ankle Saturday, but X-rays were negative and that was the good news. He claims that he will play Monday against Indiana, but that’s a risky proposition for Fantasy owners in cumulative leagues. The Lakers might whistle a different tune than the player and keep him on the shelf to get extended rest rather than risk further damage. Play it safe  and reserve him. If Randle does sit, Fs Brandon Bass and Ryan Kelly might be solid short-term DFS solutions, and worth a spot in deeper Fantasy formats.

Lastly, San Antonio Spurs PF/C Tim Duncan (knee) is nearing a return, as he has returned to the court for 3-on-3 practice. While there is no official timetable for return from the team, he should likely be available right after the All-Star break, or shortly thereafter. Wait to see him officially return and play a full game without any setbacks before trusting him again. And look for the team to play it very safe with him in back-to-back situations. While it is just speculation at this point, head coach Gregg Popovich has a tendency to rest his players when healthy, let alone returning from a long-term injury.

    WEEK 16 SCHEDULE ANALYSIS

    FAVORABLE

NEW ORLEANS PELICANS: It’s rather obvious that all Pelicans starters are must-have Fantasy options in cumulative leagues since they’re the only team with three games this week. The good news is that their two road games are against teams which allow plenty of points, too.

    UNFAVORABLE

MIAMI HEAT: The Heat are scheduled for just one game, so that’s bad news in cumulative Fantasy formats. The Heat also host the Spurs, the top defensive team in the NBA, so that’s bad news for those in leagues which average points per game in a scoring period, too.

DFS BASKETBALL STACK TEAM OF THE DAY

MONDAY – Cleveland vs. Sacramento. LeBron and Kyrie Irving should blow up against the defensively-challenged Kings.
    TUESDAY
    – Houston at Golden State. The Rockets and Warriors will combine for at least 220 points in a Fantasy Fiesta.
WEDNESDAY – Sacramento at Philadelphia. The Kings and 76ers are terrible on defense, but can rack up plenty of points.
THURSDAY – Washington at Milwaukee. Both of these clubs have strong DFS options, and neither team is good at D.
