Injury Concerns About Ben Roethlisberger Heading Into Week 10

Injury Concerns About Ben Roethlisberger Heading Into Week 10
Inside Injuries November 6, 2018 5:36PM EDT

In-Depth Injury Insights from the team at insideinjuries.com

Chris Carson RB, Seahawks: hip/groin injury

Chris Carson never should have played on Sunday after aggravating a hip injury that originally bothered him over a month ago. He was questionable entering the game to go along with being an Elevated Injury Risk (14%). Carson paid the price, quickly suffering yet another injury that could now sideline him for multiple weeks. He is being listed with a thigh injury, but it is likely related even if the injury isn’t to the exact same location. A hip injury is already a tough one for a RB to play through, and it can be easily aggravated or lead to another injury due to overcompensating.

Now Carson is facing an Optimal Recovery Time of at least two weeks, but it will be much longer before his High Injury Risk improves. The Seahawks should rely on Mike Davis and Rashaad Penny through at least Week 11. If Carson returns before then, his risk of re-injury will be incredibly high.

Chris Ivory RB, Bills: shoulder injury

Ivory appeared to suffer a serious shoulder injury on Sunday. He had to be carted off of the field and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Fortunately he appears to have avoided a serious injury. The team wanted to play it safe and ensure that there wasn’t a more serious problem aside from his shoulder injury. He is being listed as day-to-day and has a shot at suiting up Week 10. Inside Injuries is still showing an Elevated Injury Risk (17%) with a Below Average HPF (60%), so he isn’t a viable fantasy option this week. Even when healthy he isn’t worth much consideration, and now battling an injury he really isn’t worth it.

James White RB, Patriots: knee injury

White gave the Patriots another injury scare when he left the Sunday night game to have his left knee evaluated. Knee injuries have plagued their RBs this season – Sony Michel has a history of left knee problems and has missed two straight games while Jeremy Hill tore his ACL in September. Expect White to miss some practice time this week to receive treatment. He will likely deal with some soreness and swelling, but it shouldn’t sideline him in Week 10. Even when Michel returns, White should continue to be a solid fantasy option, especially in PPR leagues.

Mark Ingram RB, Saints: arm injury

Ingram appeared to injure his arm on a fumble in the first half, but he quickly returned with it wrapped up. He wasn’t too involved late in the game, although the injury likely isn’t to blame. Alvin Kamara has been unstoppable and has been seeing the field a lot more than Ingram. He will continue to be a somewhat risky fantasy option going forward, but this injury isn’t a concern.

Sammy Watkins WR, Chiefs: ankle injury

Entering Week 9, Watkins was already an Elevated Injury Risk. Then on Sunday he had to leave to have his ankle/foot taped up. Watkins was able to return to the game and finished with 62 yards, but he was seen walking gingerly after the game. Coach Andy Reid said he “banged up his foot,” downplaying the injury. While Inside Injuries is picking up a soft tissue foot injury, indicating it is very mild, his Injury Risk has moved to High (25%), which is very concerning. Watkins is likely to miss some practice reps this week but shouldn’t be sidelined in Week 10, although it could slow him down and affect his performance. His Below Average HPF suggests he won’t play his best.

Ben Roethlisberger QB, Steelers: shoulder injury

Once again Ben Roethlisberger proved his toughness on Sunday. Big Ben was already playing through a finger fracture on his left hand. Then on a fourth quarter scramble he took a huge hit, landing hard on his right side. Roethlisberger’s throwing shoulder was in a lot of pain, but he returned after missing just one snap. With a Thursday night meeting with the Panthers up next, he is unlikely to see much practice time in the next few days. He didn’t practice at all on Monday (although the team only listed him with a finger injury, failing to mention his shoulder). Keep an eye on him, and if you have another viable QB on your roster give them the start this week. Roethlisberger’s Elevated Injury Risk is a concern, and his Below Average HPF suggests he won’t be anywhere near 100% due to his finger and his shoulder.

Raheem Mostert RB, 49ers: arm fracture

Mostert will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a broken forearm. It was a horrific play late in a game where he scored his first NFL touchdown. Mostert was tripped up on a carry and tried to catch himself with his right arm, causing it to snap. While he is now facing a long recovery, he should be ready to go at the start of next season. Mostert showed some promising flashes backing up Matt Breida, and now Alfred Morris should see more opportunities as the second option in the 49ers running game.
