Injury Update: Lions Kerryon Johnson and O.J. Howard to Miss Multiple Weeks?

Injury Update: Lions Kerryon Johnson and O.J. Howard to Miss Multiple Weeks?
Inside Injuries November 20, 2018 2:22PM EST

The Latest Injury Updates from insideinjuries.com

Alex Smith QB, Redskins: double leg fracture

Smith’s season is over after he suffered a gruesome double leg fracture on Sunday. Smith’s leg got pinned as he was sacked, and it was immediately clear his leg was bent in the wrong direction near the ankle. He was immobilized and carted off the field to quickly be taken to the hospital. Smith underwent surgery right away to repair the tibia and fibula fractures. While his season is over, this shouldn’t be a career-threatening injury. The Redskins will turn to Colt McCoy to lead the way the rest of the season. As long as he avoids a serious setback along the way, Smith should be ready to go by week 1 next year.

Kerryon Johnson RB, Lions: knee sprain

An MRI revealed relatively good news for Johnson. He left Sunday’s with a knee injury, and there was some early speculation that he may have torn his ACL. Fortunately all ligaments are intact. He will not need to undergo surgery and is considered week-to-week. Still, a “sprain” indicates partial tearing to a ligament, so this is still going to lead to a multi-week absence. Inside Injuries is showing that he should miss at least 4 weeks to allow enough time for his knee to heal. If he returns before then, his risk of re-injury will be very high.

O.J. Howard TE, Bucs: high ankle sprain

Howard should be looking at a multi-week absence after suffering a high ankle sprain against the Giants. Howard left in the 4th quarter and did not return. Inside Injuries is showing a grade 2 (moderate) ankle injury, and that comes with a 4 week Optimal Recovery Time. High ankle sprains are more severe than a standard sprain and take much longer to heal. If he returns before week 15 his risk of re-injury will be increased. Cameron Brate should see a nice bump in his fantasy value while Howard is on the shelf.

Marcus Mariota QB, Titans: elbow nerve injury

The Titans had a rough Sunday. Not only did they get blown out by Andrew Luck and the Colts, but Mariota appeared to re-aggravate the elbow injury that sidelined him earlier in the season. He left with the injury after getting sacked in the first half and did not return. While he said he would be okay, a lot of the chatter coming out of Tennessee sounds awfully similar to the first time around. Unfortunately our initial warning came true. Nerve injuries very slowly improve, and there is a high risk of aggravation even when the player feels like they are almost back to normal. Mariota will undergo additional tests throughout the week, but don’t be surprised if this one forces him to miss week 12 (and possibly even more time). If he tries to play through it, his grip on the football will be impacted. That affects everything from ball secuity to his ability to deliver longer passes downfield. It would also hurt his accuracy if he doesn’t have a good feel for the football.

Jimmy Graham TE, Packers: thumb fracture

Graham may not be the player he used to be, but it still leaves the Packers in a tough spot after their starting TE suffered a right thumb fracture on Thursday night. While the team hasn’t reported a projected timeline, our algorithm indicates that he should miss 6 weeks. If he returns before then, it will be very painful and he will fall into the High Injury Risk category. It’s a tough injury for a TE because it affects both pass-catching and blocking. Graham has said he will try to play through it, but keep expectations low.

Doug Martin RB, Raiders: ankle sprain

Martin was MIA in the second half of the Raiders week 11 win over the Cardinals. After a strong first half, an injury was the only good reason that he wouldn’t be in the game, but the team never reported one. During his postgame press conference, Coach Gruden said that Martin “got shot up” in his ankle at halftime, so clearly the team knew something was going on. His status for week 12 is up in the air for now, so we will need to closely watch his practice participation throughout the week. While this doesn’t appear to be a significant ankle sprain, it still comes with a 2 week Optimal Recovery Time. His current HPF (Health Performance Factor) sits at 49%, which is Below Average. That means we expect him to underperform if he is active in week 12.

Brandon LaFell WR, Raiders: torn Achilles

LaFell’s season is over after suffering a torn Achilles on Sunday. The Raiders were already very thin at WR, and now they won’t have LaFell. Jordy Nelson missed week 11 with a knee injury but has a shot at returning next Sunday. Martavis Bryant is also week-to-week after suffering a partially torn PCL. If all goes well, LaFell’s recovery should take around 9 months, but it takes closer to a year to feel back to normal.

Follow Inside Injuries on Twitter for breaking news and updates on all of these players heading into week 12.
