Injury Updates: Jaguars Leonard Fournette Out Four-Plus Weeks?

Injury Updates: Jaguars Leonard Fournette Out Four-Plus Weeks?
Inside Injuries October 2, 2018 1:54PM EDT

The Latest Injury Updates and Details from insideinjuries.com

Tyler Eifert TE, Bengals: ankle fracture

Eifert’s reputation as one of the more injury-prone players in the league continued to build on Sunday, and it’s another season-ender. Eifert’s ankle was pinned under a defender as he was tackled following a reception. It appeared to cause the ankle to dislocate. Eifert already underwent surgery for what the team said was a fracture, and even though they haven’t said it, there is certainly ligament damage as well. This injury is a tough break for Eifert, who was making a nice comeback following his third back surgery. This means Eifert will have played just 14 games from 2015-2017.

Eifert has a good chance to return for the 2019 season, but he will remain a very High Injury Risk, just as he was entering 2018. His injury history is incredibly concerning, and there will continue to be durability issues.

Leonard Fournette RB, Jaguars: hamstring strain

After missing two games recovering from a hamstring strain, Fournette didn’t last long in his first game back. Inside Injuries warned that he remained a High Injury Risk due to the highly recurrent nature of hamstring strains, and now he is out and could be looking at an even longer absence.

Fournette underwent an MRI to determine the extent of the injury. The team announced that the strain was no worse this time than it was when he was initially hurt in week 1. While that’s good news, it still means he is going to be out awhile. Three weeks wasn’t enough time, so he should be looking at a four-plus week absence now. Sorry Fournette owners, but it could be a lost season.

Will Fuller WR, Texans: hamstring strain

Will Fuller’s hamstring woes continue. Fuller left Sunday’s game with a hamstring strain and did not return. Entering Week 4 he was  one of those interesting cases where he had a High Injury Risk but an Above Average Health Performance Factor. That means we expected him to play well (which he did) but he was at a high risk of getting injured (which he did).

Now Fuller could be looking at a multi-week absence. They said he probably could have returned if the

Texans needed him, but he wouldn’t have been able to run all of his normal routes. That is a clear sign that he shouldn’t have played. Anytime a RB or WR suffers a hamstring strain, it is a concern. And it’s especially problematic for a player like Fuller who has a history. His owners need to be prepared for a lengthy absence. Inside Injuries is showing a four week Optimal Recovery Time.

T.Y. Hilton WR, Colts: hamstring strain & chest injury

Hilton had a rough Sunday. First he left with a chest injury that looked like a possible sprain to the AC or SC joint. He surprisingly returned, only to leave in the 4th quarter with a hamstring strain. The Colts have a quick turnaround with the Thursday night game, and it’s unlikely he suits up. If it’s a mild strain, he still needs at least two weeks for the hamstring to heal. Soft tissue injuries like this typically linger, so it could be awhile before he is close to 100%. Hilton is another player who wasn’t at a Low Injury Risk to start the season, so an injury like this wasn’t unexpected.

O.J. Howard TE, Bucs: MCL sprain

Howard suffered an MCL sprain that is expected to sideline him for 2-4 weeks, which is in line with Inside Injuries’ Optimal Recovery Time. It’s good timing as the Bucs have a bye coming up, so he may not miss more than a game or two. MCL sprains also heal well on their own and rarely require surgery. Howard will still need to take the time to rehab his knee so he isn’t any weaker when he does return. That would lead to a higher risk of injury, but if he waits until Week 8 to return he should be okay.

Geronimo Allison WR, Packers: concussion

Allison is in concussion protocol after getting hurt late in the Packers’ win. He was serving as the #2 receiving option as Randall Cobb recovers from a hamstring strain, but now there’s no guarantee he can get cleared ahead of Week 5. Concussions are unpredictable and it’s tricky to assess how long recovery will take. His Injury Risk is now Elevated (24%).

Will Dissly TE, Seahawks: torn patellar tendon

The tight end position continues to be decimated by injuries. Dissly was an exciting young player who was emerging as a favorite target of Russell Wilson. But now his season is over after just four weeks due to a torn patellar tendon. This is the same injury that Jimmy Graham suffered in 2015 with the Seahawks. While he should return in 2019 and be ready to go Week 1, he won’t feel 100%. Many players who suffer this injury are able to return to the field within a year, but it will slow him down a bit and affect his overall athleticism.

Marquise Goodwin WR, 49ers: leg injury

After missing time early in the season with a quad contusion, Goodwin is again battling a lower body injury. It’s unclear if this is an aggravation of his previous quad injury or a new one. Either way, he is very banged up and may not be ready to go for Week 5. His fantasy owners should leave him on the bench even if he is active. His Injury Risk continues to be Elevated.

Rob Gronkowski TE, Patriots: ankle injury

Gronk aggravated an ankle injury in the Patriots Week 4 win, and although it’s minor, he may not be ready to go for their Thursday night meeting with the Colts. Gronk has a long injury history, and this is something he has been dealing with for a few weeks. The ankle isn’t getting better by just managing practice reps but playing through it. Our algorithm is showing that he needs to take two weeks off to allow it to fully heal. He also hasn’t had a good season so far and has greatly underperformed. It’s best to get healthy now so he can be a contributor again in the second half of the season without any lingering injury concerns.

Sammy Watkins WR, Chiefs: hamstring strain

Watkins had a disappointing week, leaving early in the first half with a hamstring strain. He was unable to return and should be considered questionable for Week 5. As we have said time and time again, hamstring strains are very tough injuries for a WR. One week is never enough time to fully recover, so even if he was cleared to play on Sunday he would be at a very high risk of re-injury. With a Below Average HPF (Health Performance Factor – how Inside Injuries predicts a player’s ability to perform), it’s unlikely he would be much of a contributor if he does end up being active.
