Week Nine Fantasy Football matchups to exploit

WRs vs. CBs

Cortland Sutton vs. Johnathan Joseph

Sutton has been an exciting playmaker for the Broncos this year, and with Demaryius Thomas traded away, his Fantasy upside will be seen. He had a 12.9 percent target share working behind Thomas, which was 88th among all wide receivers. Thomas had a 19.6 percent target share ahead of him, and now Sutton will absorb most of the targets Thomas left behind. He has a good matchup to show off his talent against the Texans, who do not have good outside cornerbacks. He will have Johnathan Joseph covering him, who has been the primary target for opposing offenses. Joseph is allowing the most yards and having the most passes coming his way among the Houston corners. He also is banged up with knee and ankle ailments. Sutton is in line for a big week with Thomas gone and in a plus matchup.

Kenny Golladay vs. Trae Waynes

Kenny Golladay enters Week Nine in a very similar situation to Sutton. His opportunities will grow a lot due to a big piece of the Lions offense departing in Golden Tate. Tate had led the Lions in targets thus far with 69 on the season. Golladay owners should be excited about the trade, and will be rewarded right away with a prime matchup for him going up against Trae Waynes. Xavier Rhodes is expected to be back this week, and can certainly limit Marvin Jones on the other side of the field. That will incline Matthew Stafford to make Golladay the preferred target this week. He has been limited to three targets in the last two games, but I expect Golladay to see around ten targets this week against the Vikings.

John Brown vs. Joe Haden

John Brown burned the Steelers in Week Four, and I expect him to do so again in Week Nine. On just three receptions, Brown was able to go for 116 yards and a touchdown. Brown honestly has more upside than that this week if the Steelers can keep pace with the Ravens more than they did in that game. He still ranks second in air yards among all receivers, so his upside is sky high. The Ravens should rely on the pass game with how stout the Steelers’ run defense has been and allowing the fourth fewest rushing yards. Expect a bounce back this week against a defense that struggle against down field threats.

D.J. Moore vs. Brent Grimes

In Week Eight, D.J. Moore showed exactly why the Panthers took him in the first round. He was able to go for 90 yards on five catches against one of the best defenses in football. What helped him get that big performance was Torrey Smith being out due to injury, and he is trending towards being out again this week. Moore was able to see his most snaps of the year with 46 after a high of 33 snaps in Week Three. Now in Week Nine, he draws a tremendous matchup against the Buccaneers, who have allowed the third most points to wide receivers.

Danny Amendola vs. Buster Skrine

Every week, the game plan for opposing offenses of the Jets should be to attack them in the slot. In every game this year the Jets have allowed a double digit Fantasy performance to the opposing slot wide receiver. Amendola should be able to put together another good game against the Jets especially with Albert Wilson out. He has seen 13 targets in the last two games with Wilson out of the picture, and should see a healthy number of targets again this week.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling vs. Jason McCourty

With how well Stephon Gilmore has been defending his wide receiver this year, Valdes-Scantling should benefit from Gilmore’s coverage on Davante Adams. Gilmore has allowed a low passer rating of just 70.1 and is graded as the fourth-best cornerback in coverage this year. This will make Aaron Rodgers look for a guy like Valdes-Scantling more against Jason McCourty. McCourty has allowed the most yards of all Patriots cornerbacks this year. There was some concern over Valdes-Scantling’s role with Geronimo Allison coming back, but he still remained a part of the offense and ran just three fewer routes than Adams. I would not be surprised to see him lead the Packers in receiving this week.

RBs vs. DEFs

Nick Chubb vs. KC

With Carlos Hyde gone, Chubb has become a workhorse for the Browns with 18 carries in each of the past two games. The only other running back to receive a carry is Duke Johnson with three in the past two games. Now he will have his best matchup yet against a team that has allowed 5.4 yards per carry. If Chubb can get around the same number of carries he has seen recently, he has a good chance of getting over 80 yards and finding the end zone.

Chris Carson vs. LAC

Carson continues to be a focal point of the Seahawks’ run-based offense this year. In the past four games, Carson has seen an average of 23.75 touches and he should be given a lot of carries against a subpar run defense. The Seahawks even went far enough to give Rashaad Penny no snaps in Week Eight as a vote of confidence in Carson. Carson has gone for over 100 rushing yards in three of his past four games and could do so again against the Chargers.

Adrian Peterson vs. ATL

Peterson has put together three straight inspiring performances, and another looks to be in the cards this week. He faces off against a Falcons defense that has struggled against running backs specially in pass coverage. They have allowed 62 receptions to running backs which is the most given up by a defense. With Chris Thompson highly questionable for this week’s game, Peterson could easily be more involved in the receiving game on top of the rushing ability he already has. He could be in line for over 25 touches against a Falcons defense that has not really stopped anyone this year. The only thing that has really held him back this year has been bad game scripts, but the Redskins are the Vegas favorites, and should be winning or within reach the whole game. With the injuries to the Falcons’ best defenders, Peterson will rack up a lot of yards against them and add on to his impressive year.

Lamar Miller vs. DEN

For the time being, it looks like Lamar Miller is back into form. He has put together two straight 100-yard performances and now draws a great matchup against the Broncos’ run defense. They have allowed the second most rushing yards to running backs, and it makes perfect sense to keep them honest on the ground with the Broncos’ pass rush looming against the Texans’ suspect offensive line. Miller should see around 20 touches this week, and has a good chance to score again as a big part of the Texans’ high powered offense.

Latavius Murray vs. DET

Dalvin Cook has a chance to return this week, but most signs point to him not playing again. He got in a limited practice on Wednesday, but ESPN’s Courtney Cronin already reported that Cook would be out at least through the Vikings’ bye in Week 10. That means another great opportunity for Murray against a below average Lions run defense. The Lions just allowed Chris Carson to gash them for 105 yards on the ground, and Murray is a similar style runner to Carson. He has looked great running the ball the past few weeks, and that will continue against the soft run defense of the Lions.
