Woo and Boo: Your Start and Sit recommendations for Week 2

Woo

Quarterbacks

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs, at Steelers

If you are thinking Mahomes’ Week 1 performance was a fluke, think again. This offense has the firepower to hang with most teams around the league and a defense that will keep them throwing. This week, Mahomes goes on the road to Pittsburgh to face an angry Steelers team looking to rebound after the tie with the Browns. Look for Mahomes to be playing from behind against a defense that had a bottom-four week in points allowed to the quarterback. He should once again give you QB1 numbers and is a strong play if you need the spot start.

Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers, vs. Lions

Garoppolo’s 2018 debut left a lot to be desired. In Week 2, he will have every chance to rebound against a Lions defense that was embarrassed on Monday night against the Jets. With the 49ers’ running game not appearing to be a strength early on, Garoppolo should be the guy to take the reins of the offense and put points on the board. Expect a solid low-end QB1 day to the tune of 280 yards and at least two touchdowns in this one.

Running Backs

Chris Thompson, Redskins, vs. Colts

Thompson has some intrigue as a solid Flex play this week. He played 42 percent of the snaps for the Redskins in Week 1 and that should improve slightly in this matchup. Don’t be shocked to see a 15-touch game for 125 total yards from scrimmage and a score. The Colts’ defense proved in the opener that they are very susceptible to allowing points to opposing running backs.

Tevin Coleman, Falcons, vs. Panthers

With backfield-mate Devonta Freeman’s status in doubt for Week 2, Coleman could see himself as an easy RB2 play if his touches are that of a lead back. It was a rough go for the Falcons’ run game in Week 1, but with this game being a potential back-and-forth affair, Coleman has some strong PPR appeal here. Keep checking the updates on Freeman until kickoff, but if you are a Coleman owner and Freeman is out, lock and load Coleman in your starting lineup this week. A 20-touch game could be within reach, which could push him towards 100 yards and a score.

Wide Receivers

Devin Funchess, Panthers, vs. Falcons

Funchess could be the primary beneficiary after the injury to tight end Greg Olsen in Week 1. With only three catches for 41 yards in the opener, look for Funchess to improve on the five targets he saw a week ago. You could possibly see that total double in this game, as the Panthers could be positioned to match points with the Falcons. I could see a six-catch game for 95 yards and a score here, making him a low-end WR2 play for Week 2.

Chris Godwin, Buccaneers, vs. Eagles

Godwin is another player that could capitalize on an injury situation, as DeSean Jackson is iffy for this matchup. Oddly enough, Godwin also had a three-catch day for 41 yards in Week 1. With the stingy Eagles’ run defense coming to town, look for Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Bucs to once again be tossing the ball all around the field on Sunday. Godwin is fully capable of a five-catch game for 70 yards and a score. Putting him in the WR3/Flex range for the week.

Tight Ends

Ricky Seals-Jones, Cardinals, at Rams

The Rams will score points, but you can’t count on the Cardinals’ passing attack to go after the Rams’ tough cornerbacks. The Cardinals will try and grind out yards with David Johnson, but the profile on how to attack this defense was put on tape on Monday night with the performance of Raiders TE Jared Cook. Seals-Jones should see a healthy number of targets in this game that could turn into a four-catch, 55-yard day and a possible score. He’s worthy of a starting spot if you stream at the position.

Defense/Special Teams

Redskins DST vs. Colts

The Redskins defense looked very strong in the Week 1 win over the Cardinals. I expect for that to continue in the home opener against a somewhat weak Colts offense. The Colts showed that they are still a one-dimensional team and if the Redskins’ pass rush can get to Andrew Luck it will be a fruitful day. Look for some sacks and potentially a couple of turnovers in this one, making the Redskins a nice streaming option for Week 2.

Boo

Quarterbacks

Aaron Rodgers, Packers, at Vikings

The Packers are still non-committal on the status of Rodgers. But, in the matchup that essentially knocked Rodgers out of action in 2017, it may not be the smartest thing to send an injured Rodgers onto the field against the Vikings defense. If he plays, you likely may have to play him. But if you are able to scoop up another quarterback with a decent matchup (Broncos QB Case Keenum against the Raiders, for example), it may not hurt to go in that direction.

Tom Brady, Patriots, at Jaguars

Another stud QB here in the Boo column. I’m not advocating that you need to bench Brady, because odds are you may not have the choice. But, going on the road to face the Jaguars, you must temper your expectations. Odds are this game will be low-scoring and the Jaguars will be after Brady, forcing the offense to run the ball to beat them. Don’t go in expecting your usual 300-yard day, as he could struggle to give you 250 in this one.

Running Backs

Derrick Henry, Titans, vs. Texans

Things are off to a very slow start for Henry in this offense. He played just 29 percent of the snaps in Week 1 while Dion Lewis looked like the better of the running back duo. It was largely game-script dependent, but it could also be a sign of things to come. The Titans’ offense could be playing more out of the spread in this game, which is more suited to Lewis’s skillset. Henry may again be the odd man out here in this matchup. Unless he gets into the end zone, you may be kicking yourself for starting him, especially in a PPR format.

Marshawn Lynch, Raiders, at Broncos

Lynch had a fantastic opening drive in Week 1, but after that you rarely saw him on the field. In fact, he only saw 36 percent of the snaps. He saw 11 carries in the matchup, but that would have to improve in Week 2 if the Raiders stand a chance in Denver. Odds are he will again be phased out of the game script as the Broncos get out to a lead. Lynch has some small standard scoring appeal in this game, but in PPR, avoid him. There are surely other options.

Wide Receivers

Chris Hogan, Patriots, at Jaguars

Hogan finished Week 1 with one catch for 11 yards. Now he gets the pleasure of going to Jacksonville and facing off with Jalen Ramsey. Simply put, this is an avoid type of matchup. With Brady potentially suffering in this game as well, it will of course trickle down to the receivers. It’s hard to imagine Hogan getting more than three catches in this game due to the matchup. Look elsewhere if you can.

Brandon Marshall, Seahawks, at Bears

Monday night will be a homecoming of sorts for Marshall as he returns to Chicago, where he began his career. With Doug Baldwin out for this game, Marshall becomes the de-facto go-to option for Russell Wilson. With the strong Bears pass rush though, Wilson may not have the time to allow Marshall to get open, which means limited opportunities for the former Bear. You could easily see another three-catch day for Marshall here, but without the touchdown. That should land him firmly on your bench.

Tight Ends

Charles Clay, Bills, vs. Chargers

First off, rookie quarterback Josh Allen is making his first career NFL start. Also, did you see the performance of this offense in Week 1? That game film speaks for itself. There are other options to go to at a position that is a currently a Fantasy wasteland.

Defense/Special Teams

Falcons DST vs. Panthers

The Falcons defense looked pretty good in Week 1, but they also lost two of their strongest pieces in Keanu Neal and Deion Jones. As it typically happens in NFC South matchups, this game could wind up being a high scoring affair. After the injuries, I would have looked for other options on the waiver wire, as should you.
